How will ROTC work with coronavirus and quarantine?

re the original question, I think that based on Purdue President Mitch Daniels' description of how his university intends to deal with COVID, the following could describe some of the measures that ROTC may also take at other campuses around the country.

Campuses could be opened again along with these potential measures, which are preliminary and not at all definitive:
- pre-testing of students and staff before arrival in August and a robust testing system during the school year
- for anyone showing symptoms, prompt testing and quarantine if positive
- tracing of proximate and/or frequent contacts of those who test positive, with 14-day self-quarantine requested of those contacts
- an indefinite prohibition on gatherings above a specified size
- continued limitations on visitors to and travel away from campus
- required use of face coverings and other protective equipment
- frequent, perhaps daily deep cleaning of facilities

Unfortunately, the comments by @cptenca and @ab24 are suspect to becoming political arguments on this thread. Not to mention "real talk" is subjective in this day and age, so I thought it better to maybe mitigate any confrontation by the possibility of closing the thread.

I respect the concern, but I think while my comment was confrontational, it didn't refer to anything partisan and were more just to point out a statistical fallacy and not a political one. I think we can all agree that we are looking forward to getting back to normal as soon as possible!

So, the Cal State system just announced they would be largely online in the fall, with limited exceptions for classes that need more hands-on learning. Wonder if ROTC is going to be included in those exceptions. Anyone have info on this?

This is going to be a challenging semester. In addition to CSUs staying online (so students probably not returning to campus though CSU has high commuter pop in any case.) DS school is altering their schedule to avoid the flu season - Start in early/mid-Aug and End at Thanksgiving, if that holds through the coming second wave and presumes they can find tests for the initial clearance.

I wonder how that will impact crosstown ROTC partnerships between schools that might be online and others that have their campuses open. For instance, AFROTC at U of San Diego does its crosstown with the SDSU detachment. If SDSU as a Cal State school has closed campus, what happens to the USD kids if their campus is open?

USD is the host school. USD is "scheduled" to open in Aug and finish prior to Thanksgiving. PLNA has not made an announcement. They PT at USD

Not unless AFROTC has changed. When my son was considering USD this Spring as one of his AFROTC choices, SDSU was the host. We were even in communication with SDSU AFROTC about how the crosswtown logisitics worked. This is from the AFROTC college locator page: "University of San Diego has a crosstown agreement with San Diego State University—Det 075. Typically, this means you’ll be enrolled as a full-time student at University of San Diego and take your ROTC classes each week at San Diego State University—Det 075."

Just a question and too lazy to google it: Are we talking about the Cal State system AND the University of California system? Both of them have campuses in SD.

Cal State system made the announcement. No word form UC system. But I have heard of a Cal State school that is planning on opening, so the announcement must have been more of a guideline. Plus some courses will be allowed on campus, such as nursing and science.

Take some comfort in the clear thinking and leadership shown by Purdue's president, the ex-CEO of Eli Lilly and former US Budget Director, Mitch Daniels. Purdue will be open this fall, and will use all its resources to test students, quarantine those who test positive, quarantine them etc but will be open and offer in-person, on-campus instruction.

At the risk of sounding political, I'll go out on a limb and assert that this is the kind of leadership we need. As Yogi B. said, it's hard to make predictions about the future - and really hard to predict anything now -- but we should not be surprised if more and more universities in coming weeks start to follow Purdue's strong and courageous, also prudent and wise IMHO, leadership. "Adapt, improvise, overcome."

Mitch Daniels leaving DC was great for Purdue, but unfortunate for the country. He definitely made my top ten list of public servants.

Hopefully, he and a few other education and business leaders can get the traction in the media in order to show how they plan to open and others can jump on board. Since there is no cohesive national strategy for reopening, leaders like Mitch Daniels have the experience, respect for science and the credibility to set an example others can feel comfortable following, instead of waiting for the next volleys to be fired in Washington.

I am trying to remain optimistic, thinking they can reverse the decision. After all, this happened:

As a side note, My heart goes out to all the kids and their families that are having to deal with the school closings, uncertainties etc. I don't even want to think about how I would deal with a couple of smart and curious late teen sons during this period. You all have my prayers and respect. Maybe this is the kick in the A$$ we've all needed.

My oldest is in a lengthy training cycle in the Army which has been only slightly modified. He is in the field as we speak. The younger lives on the edge of LA, 5 minutes by bike from the San Gabriels, and works for a NASA contractor. His work is mostly in the lab so he isn't tied to home. We have yet another level of appreciation for our family's good fortune.

I was just going to post the same thing. It looks like the Cal State system only has three colleges that include Rotc so it isnt going to be that huge of a problem. Ironically enough, its the Univ of California schools (UCLA, Berkley, etc) which is its own system, has more Rotc detachments.

The AFROTC locator shows a lot more than three CSU's, Humey. Are you referring only to host schools?

yes it was only host schools. I didnt realize the other Cal state school students were going to other schools for Rotc. As it so happens many of them aree UC schools which at this point havent heard anything about staying closed or not

Never mind, the UC schools dont see themselves opening in the fall.

Thanks @THmom. That was a very informative briefing. Sounds like, for incoming AROTC freshmen, they are considering a few things for students at institutions that go online:

1. Work with the school to allow ROTC cadets on campus.
2. Have the cadets take online classes at home and conduct training with a unit closest to their home.
3. Push some training to spring, when schools will hopefully reopen.

It didn’t sound like they had everything ironed out yet, which isn’t surprising given the dynamic nature of the situation. So far DS isn’t affected, as his school has announced it will be open for business in the fall. But, we’ll see. Just bought plane tickets, reserved a hotel, and are planning to drop him off in three months. Nice to know Cadet Command is thinking about contingency plans in case the school changes it’s mind.

Yeay, glad someone saw my message! I thought it was super informative, too. Sooo....you bought tickets already? DS's ROO said they're planning on the August start, but I'm hesitant. I guess worst case scenario would be we'd drop at the door like at the SAs???
