How will ROTC work with coronavirus and quarantine?

I think that the current activities going on all around the country will be very telling about how large gatherings are going to play out with COVID. Thousands gathered together, for over a week now. Wearing masks for the most part. I think we will be seeing how that looks in a real, practical ‘experiment’. Very similar to thousands in dorms.
The experiment has already started on campuses with athletes returning. Early results are that several players have tested positive forcing them into at least a 14 day quarantine.

Not a doubt in my mind there will be positive cases. Facilities will need a plan for dealing with them. USNA does. It was part of the reason they keept Mids at home in March, so they could ramp up their ability to deal with positive cases. Not a doubt in my mind that they can, and will have cases.

What I was referring to, is whether there actually WILL be large breakouts. Or not. We are presently having large gatherings, socially distanced and not, masks and not. Were clusters seeded? Very similar to the atmosphere on a campus/in dorms. It will be interesting to see whether the activities result in huge, massive breakouts or not.

BTW, this is NOT a commentary on any opinion of COVID. It is only an observational point about what has been happening, and if it will/wont cause breakouts, and how it can be used to help going forward for college policy.

You can add Michigan Tech to the Open On-Campus list.
  • We are planning to welcome students, faculty, and staff back to campus for the start of the 2020-2021 academic year.
  • Michigan Tech is ready to pivot between face-to-face and remote instruction when necessary.

(Nb. U. of Utah and U. of Wisconsin could be placed in the neither/nor, so-called "hybrid" model, as their presidents' statements are a bit ambiguous as to whether most classes will be online or in-person)

Quite a few "Public Universities" are planning on going "virtual" again (Ie: sending students home) the beginning of November 2020. They won't be going back (as of now) till Spring Semester. I think ALL ROTC programs are going to be in for a rough ride in the coming year. In order to complete "mandatory" summer training, it may require 7,000 students (In each service) to travel, pass medical and quarantine process, and then integrate into different size units. If the Covid-19 issue is still unsettled ROTC training next summer may be in jeopardy. Hopefully the ROTC students will get the same vaccine priority as the academy students. It has leaked already that AD military is Priority 1 for vaccines, but since Nat Guard, Reserves, and Officer and enlisted candidates are of such importance they should be Priority II. If I were back on a ship or shore unit, I don't think I would be real happy that a few or a bunch of temporary unknown status trainees got assigned and put everyone in the unit at risk. I would hope that nothing regarding a virus or sickness would derail a military career, enlisted or officer! The DoD counts on this infusion of officers every year to complete needs, if they fail to commission a full year of ROTC students, personally I think it not feasible, DoD has to do something. But everyone is looking forward to the presumptive start back to fall ROTC Programs, hopefully fall will go well!

Michigan announced yesterday that they will be back in person in the fall. Some large classes will be held virtually and I believe the email said there would be virtual options for other classes as well. Fall break is cancelled and students will not return to campus after Thanksgiving. The remainder of the semester and finals will be online. Spring break will also be cancelled.

University of New Hampshire announced a similar type of return.

DD going to Northern Arizona University (not ROTC). They are starting the semester 08/12 and will finish the semester before Thanksgiving. Mostly in person classes, with remote options and some classes only remote. It will be interesting to see how schools implement physical distancing and protective measures, such as requiring masks.

my co workers daughter is starting at Colgate in August and i believe they are going to be in person. they will be requiring all students to be tested within 24 hours of showing up on movein day and they have a nearby hotel booked for quarantine for anyone that test positive upon arrival and for anyone that gets covid while there. its a small / remote school so this plan seems like it will work for them

Looks like "most" ROTC programs are going to be similar. I can definitely see the wisdom of keeping students on campus as long as possible as some "technical" majors require very specific equipment to conduct labs and projects. I would venture a guess that if the school can afford it, they will end up housing students in hotels, condos, whatever is available to reduce the "personal" footprint on campus 24/7 and larger classes will be "remote" again to social distance when possible. In our son's NROTC Unit there is no "winter" training, so if he is released early November as is planned, he won't miss required NROTC training, but my be in trouble completing his work in labs. More of an academic problem then military though..:) Lets all hope there is a vaccine before next summer's training cycle.

Cornell is re-opening for in person classes with a few classes still being taught online. Dorms will open but be modified for no more than double occupancy. Social distancing, masks, and daily health checks will be required.

Yale just announced this morning of re-opening with students in residence, but with most classes on-line. 1st year, Jr. and Sr. in residence for Fall. Sophomore, Jr. and Sr. for Spring.

This is continuing to evolve and teachers are speaking out and asking for accommodations. TCU just changed to allow students AND teachers to choose whether the class is online. So, if the teacher chooses online and the dean approves, its online. If the teacher chooses in person classes, then the student has a choice of in person or online. Students can take classes fully online from home or from their dorm....although unclear whether this includes ROTC classes.

Looks like U Scranton and the schools in the Royal Warrior Battalion will be in person as well
