How will ROTC work with coronavirus and quarantine?

As of "right now" Tulane and University of New Orleans are both "Hybrid". Generally, the larger classes are going to be reduced in size by allowing 1/2 or 1/3 of the class to attend and the rest to watch virtually. Neither school has any "breaks" but classes end middle of November, then return after Thanksgiving remotely (the reasoning supposedly is they don't want students travelling then coming back then travelling again. As for ROTC programs, they are going to abide by the schools schedule and hold end of semester and finals remotely.

Of course this is "today"! It could very well change tomorrow or before students return depending on the status of Covid. Right now we are keeping our fingers crossed that ROTC and the Universities will be open and functioning for the time period specified. If this mess isn't under control by next summer, I have no clue what the different ROTC programs will do with summer training. They missed this years cycle, hard to think the effect of missing two of the four years summer training.

Yesterday, Georgetown University announced they will be implementing a hybrid model for the Fall 2020 semester.

if my son was at a school (NROTC) that went completely online, he would be transferring to a different school.
Good idea in theory, probably NOT so good in reality. For instance, if your son was a junior and midway through his junior year they went online, are you going to pull him out and try and get into another program mid term? Also remember, upperclassmen if they transfer, may lose a lot of their credits and course work. Also, what's to say the school he transfers to doesn't go "remote" the next semester? Would you transfer him again?

All my classes are remote except my MS 1 class. I am not on scholarship. Also dorm living is seriously structured and movement on campus is restricted, doing things like playing basketball with others is not allowed. I'm going to not spend my parents money on room and board. However I am going to commute once during week an hour and a half to the ROTC class and the Lab on weekends. My question is I won't be on campus to do any PT with other cadets. Is it possible to try and hook up with a local unit to do PT with that is closer the an hour and a half.

What did your cadre say? I'm confident they are not requiring on campus presence solely for MS1 class, but it never hurts to ask.

Cadet command does t have a good answer too this type of question yet. For example a scholarship cadet would have to be at pt- but does it make sense if they dont live by the school to force them to rent an apartment for 3 hrs of PT and a 2 hr class if everything else is online?

MIT is only allowing seniors to be on campus. The campus is closed to freshmen, sophomores and juniors and so therefore only online classes for these students. So what happens to the kids on scholarship in the ROTC program? My DD is a junior with an NROTC scholarship.

Your DD junior at MIT probably already has the answers........but, she'd be best served by:

1. Contacting her NROTC Det Chain of Command
2. Calming her mother :wiggle:

At this point, everyone needs to consult their individual schools and units. Things are going to pick up speed in the next weeks and I would expect things to be reviewed and reconsidered. DS got notice that the previous guidance on on-campus/2 to a room is now on/off/online 100% single rooms. Professors can make choice for remote/live.

Expect the units will have changes in accordance and that will trail the schools

My DD's college, Dickinson in Carlisle PA, just announced a change from mixed/hybrid to all remote classes for this fall. I don't think she has gotten official word yet but she doubts that they would have any regular in-person Army ROTC obligations because it just wouldn't be practical to have cadets travel to the college for that reason alone. This would be a big burden on those from far away.

I was wondering if they would try to get cadets hooked up with Army facilities close to the place where they will be living to maintain PT and fitness testing. Seems like training weekends may be out or condensed. It is going to be a real challenge to get these cadets trained up with the limits imposed by COVID. Time to adapt, improvise and overcome.

Just sent you a PM.... DS in same boat.

Any Norwich ROTC parents on here? My question is unless it is a STEM degree most majors will be on line, non contract cadets may not have a room in the barracks too. So if your cadets is a non contract sophomore with no room in the barracks, what do you do about your MS2 year, NS year or AS2 year? I have been told NU has to cut on campus housing down to about 2000 students, cadets and civilians.

if i were a guessing man, and i am, I would expect two possible paths they might try to follow:

1. Any ROTC program participants are physically present on campus anyway but do classes, except PT and some labs, online.

2. Work with military facilities or recruiters to accomplish PT test to activate the scholarshop and conduct record physical fitness assessments, doing everything else online. Participants would be responsible for their own PT. Note, this might still entail some significant travel depending on where the participant lives.

I expect the approach will vary by college (obviously).

Just one man's surmise/guess.

Check with not only the schools and units but also the individual professors themselves as to whether they are opting to go remote or in-person. Most schools seem to be choosing to allow the professor to select his or her preferred option.

At the schools that said they'd be open ie in-person and are welcoming students back to campus, it looks as though a significant number of professors are choosing to go remote. Probably 50/50 on average.

So check the individual classes your DS or DD seeks to enroll in. It's complicated.

Yup. DS’s schedule changed to all remote once professors were given the choice....except for his ROTC class. As of today that will still be in person. Honestly, this is going to keep changing, probably even after school starts. We are in a dynamic environment, hang on.
