DS received a letter dated 17 Jan 17 that DS was a Hold Candidate and placed on the National Wait List.

DS max scored on the CFA, rated Qualified on the DODMERB, and received a congressional nomination to USMMA. Varsity sports, National Honor Society, AP Scholar, JROTC, Clubs, Work, volunteer, awards, etc, 3.9 GPA (unweighted), and 1260 SAT.

DS is highly motivated to go to the USMMA and now feels like the game is over.

Any words of advice on DS's chances?

Thanks!

Lots of kids that are offered to USMMA ultimately accept appointments to Navy, CG, etc. If your son is on the wait list, I would hang in there. Have a good plan B & Co, but he still has a good shot. Good luck!

I won't say the game is over for him as he still does have a chance of getting an appointment. Hold simply means that he is qualified but admissions has not made the decision to offer or reject him. Plus he is still in the run for an appointment and is up for competition with many other equally qualified candidates.

I agree that he should hang in there. It's too late to apply to Navy, but he might wish to apply to USCGA which doesn't require a congressional nomination and could be a bit less competitive than USMMA depending upon what state he's applying from. Good luck.

1842--wonder if that is your name to identify the attempted invasion of texas, and subsequent departure by mexico, or of the Citadel? Anyway, moving to your question. No reason to panic. As was explained to us, NWL is where everybody goes at some point in the process. Hold is a good thing. It means you have made the cut to be considered. Just because there is a hold does not mean there is not a space. It only means that decisions have not been made. At the DOD schools, they can make decisions from the nominating authority's group of 10. When they have all of the required information in the file, from the ten (or at least from those that are competitive) they can make a decision. At USMMA it is not like that. USMMA fills slots on a state basis. As a result, before any appointment is made, they need to be able to look at all of the applicants from that state. You are not even to the date where nominations are due, so no reason to worry yet. Now, does USMMA give out early offers, yes--but, there are not a lot of those. And, by now, those are all likely given. For the class of 2020, it seemed that appointments "rolled" across the country, during the time frame of end of March and early April. They did not make a lump mailing on one day. Then, there appeared to be a second round sometime at the end of April early May. So, If state A has 1o slots, and State B has 4 slots. State A is found to have 12 applicants that the school wants. They can take 10 to fill up the state. But, State B only has 2 applicants that meet requirements. They can then take the 2 qualified from State A and fill in the spots left open in State B. There are a number of states that do not fill their spots. New Hampshire, Vermont, and some others. The foreign territories and the foreign countries allowed to send kids sometimes do not fill up either. Some states have more than their number. Texas, New York and California are big groups. I don't have the numbers handy, but almost as much as 20% or so come from those three states.

So what to do now, besides wait. Keep an open dialogue with your admissions counselor, and, any others you may have had contact with at the school. Keep an open dialogue with the coach if there is one in the picture. They can help with information on the process and possibly progress.

@golfindad thanks for information. 1842=Citadel. Thanks to all who contributed, it's a new and confusing process for us.

USCGA RA deadline was Jan 15. They are only giving out 400ish appointments and only taking a class of 295. It has been crazy competitive like the rest. I know a number of waitlists. A hold or a waitlist is great. All candidates should be proud of themselves. SA all super competive but most of all these kids want to serve. No matter what, all should be proud.

I think he'll eventually probably get in. I didn't get my appointment till April. His resume looks pretty solid, although SAT is a bit low. One of the deciding factor here may be how was he ranked in the class. Anyway, good luck.

Don't give up. My daughter got in after wait listed for our state. Many got appointments in May last year. The deadline to accept is May 1, and so those with appointments to several academies have to decide by then. Spots open to NWL at that time.
