HPCON B and masks required again indoors.

I do not approve of the fear-mongering title of this article, HOWEVER the concepts and discussion within the article do help understand what the implications of Delta, vaccinations or lack thereof, and mutations have on the future of this virus.

Daily emails remind me I'm getting closer to the return to work. I don't need the reminder and certainly didn't ask for the emails. Most of them are useless or worse, like tell me I have to do something. The buzz word this year is "Returning Strong."

We've gotten daily notifications about the mask policy but today's email said this:

"Returning Strong: Free Meals

When we return strong this fall, XXXX Food and Nutrition Services staff will be ready to serve healthy meals to students and staff. This year, all students will receive free breakfast and lunch."

I have no problem with this. I don't pay taxes in that county. I can't afford to live there. The county where I pay taxes gave teachers a five percent pay raise this year. I got a two percent with no step increase. Two years in a row with no step increase. But hand out free breakfast and lunch to all students. I'm thinking however, the money for the food is grant money like we had last year. The schools had to put out a certain amount of food or lose the money. Food service would deliver bag nasties to the sub-schools for the students who showed up. The kids wouldn't eat them so we did. Most of the time the food was edible. Especially the sweet and sour pork with rice. I can't wait for that one to show up on the menu. I'll be eating free food through my mask.

Around here, that program extends through the summers at certain parks and schools, as well as the school year (maybe different grants, idk). Imagine trying to guess how many kids will show up? Or guess the weather (kids don’t come in the rain). I’m very familiar with the program. They toss everything (that KILLS me!! We have pretty good stuff. That food banks could certainly use) not handed out. AND it cannot be saved and taken home (Don’t get me started on that piece. What young tummy can devour a big meal at one sitting). So much waste in our world.

Apologies for the diversion. @Devil Doc mentioned one of my soap boxes 🤣

I introduced my DS to the term "Bag Nasty" several years ago. I like to keep the tradition going. ;)

Ours continued the free lunch this year, I believe it is Federally funded. And just as last year, teachers have to pay for the food. Can't figure that part out. I tend to pack my lunch.

I take mine as well but free food is like money in the bank according to a retired colleague.

The difference this year is they are feeding ALL students for free. No big deal for a couple reasons. Like you said, the Feds are paying for it, and in my district even though it is one of the wealthiest in the country, greater than half of all students are on free or reduced meals and activities.

"The Feds are paying for it" (or words to that effect) gets bandied about a lot lately.

"The Feds" are not a company, and have no intrinsic wealth or means of production. ;)

Yeah, well by the FEDS I mean the US taxpayer- you and I. Our district is already a Title 1 school and the vast majority of our small student body has always eaten for free. During COVID last year they opened it to all students. Our school was the 1st to open in the state for in-person learning and many kids came back for guaranteed meals- and since it was August, they also came back for the air conditioning (I would like to think they came for academics and me, but that is not always the case).

I have had plenty of students who arrive at school before I do (and I'm early) and they can be found in front of the cafeteria doors waiting for them to open. I'm grateful hungry kids get fed. As a taxpayer I am on board with that, I just wish the food were better. I also wish we didn't have the FEDS spending us into trillions of dollars of debt for not-so-important things.

Has your wallet felt lighter lately?

My retirement income has felt it a little, but I bought in on Robinhood's IPO last week and it's up almost $40 a share today.
I am currently doing a little riverdance.

UT Congressman Christ Stewart (USAF BTW): "I'd like to remind everyone of the nine most terrifying words in the English language: "I'm from the Government, and I'm here to help.""

My kids ate free lunch and breakfast last school year. Can I afford to pay for their meals? Absolutely. However when I can get a little bit back of that "Fed money" that I pay, I take it. My kids did say it was nice that the kids that normally qualify for free are not singled out now as everyone gets a free lunch.

BTW, as a child of two educators and sib to two educators I feel you @Devil Doc. At some point this country will realize K-12 educators are well under paid and don't give me the---they only work 6 hours a day or 9 months a year or they get long holiday breaks excuses.

Do they have a test for the delta plus?

At some point, I look forward to the influenza strain coming back.
There are no tests for any variants. POS or NEG Rapid or PCR and both are getting pulled by end of Dec. Best they can do is take a few samples of tests from certain areas to a lab to break down to get an idea geographically of what the strain looks like.
