Typhoid was/is global in nature, yellow fever linked to certain geographic areas. And agreed, I think the “small beer,” “morning ale,” grog, rum for officers - it’s a wonder they could function, but presumably they were accustomed from childhood. The other thing that made me think of typhoid was that was one of the main reasons USNA had its own dairy farm, making milk, cream, ice cream, until 1998. Outstanding ice cream. Right up there with Penn State’s Creamery. Small dairies in cities in the 1800s-early 1900s were notorious for waterborne illness passed into their products, consistent with the lack of understanding of hygienic food handling. The Navy owns the land and leases it out. Rumor has it that certain USNA icons reside there.
