Hello,

Here’s a little background on me. I am a sophomore in college on a full ride through merit based scholarships. I plan on enlisting in the guard for the fall semester and taking a semester of school to go to OSUT. After I have a assurance letter that I will be accepted into the ROTC program on completion of OSUT. Currently waiting Meps approval before signing my contract. My first semester of college last year I had a 4.0 (most of my classes were basic classes need to work towards my Mechanical Engineering Degree). My second semester I did alright, but I had a D in chemistry. My other grades were 2 B’s and 3 A’s. I decided I needed to retake chemistry and so far I have a 88. I plan on getting that up. My college will wipe the D from my transcript if I maintain a B or higher when retaking. I currently take 17 hours in college while working a 30 hour a week job and a 15 hour a week internship. I am a volunteer firefighter, Sunday school teacher, band director, and president of a engineering club. I work out 6-7 times a week and do fine in my CFA. I am taking Chemistry again (previously stated) and Calculus as well as things for my minor (political science). I’ve completed all my English classes (honors) and pre-engineering classes (like college algebra, pre-Calc, and etc.) I don’t have the time or schedule that would allow me to pick up physics. I applied to USAFA last year and had 3 nominations, but was told I was rejected due to classes I needed. I have a 26 ACT (I know it’s low plan on taking it in October again) and have a college GPA of 3.3 (as of right now, mainly because the D). I’m high school I was a varsity baseball player, president of a club, volunteer for ministry, mission trips, etc. What can I do to improve myself (I know I need a higher ACT) and Show that even though I haven’t taken physics I can still excel and be competive for a slot at USMA? P.S I’m in WV (not very competitive)

17 hours of classes = 17 academic hours in class +2 hours studying/reading/homework * 17 hours = 51 hours/week
+
30 hours work/week
+
15 hours internship/week
+
I work out 6-7 times a week = 6 hours/week
+
volunteer firefighter, Sunday school teacher, band director, and president of a engineering club.= 5 hours?/week
=
over 107 hours per week.

So your academics is a full time job. But you have added a second and a half full time job on that.
No wonder you failed Chemistry...esp if you are not putting in the extra 6+ hours a week into studying for it.
Do you absolutely have to work 30 hours per week? Can you reduce that?
You need to prioritize academics.

Why didn't you take Physics over the summer?

Note that federal accredidation rules say: "The requirement is that the institution determine that there is an amount of student work for a credit hour that reasonably approximates not less than one hour of class and two hours of out-of-class student work per week over a semester for a semester hour or a quarter for a quarter hour."

Thanks for your input, Last semester I was all online and didn’t have many resources that I could have used. I did take tutoring in Chemistry which was a minimum of two hours a week plus my weekly studying for the class. I ended up spending 8-10 hours a a week studying for Chemistry, it was my fault for my grade. I didn’t have to take it again this semester, but I did it to prove to the academies that I require a higher standard for myself and that I could comprehend the knowledge. I have to work 30 hours right now. I corrr rly am minimum wage so it doesn’t equate to a lot. I have been applying for higher paying jobs in order to work less and still be able to pay for my car, insurance, gas, school books, and etc. I couldn’t take physics this summer because I couldn’t afford the class. I can’t afford college unless I maintain my scholarships (to maintain scholarships I need 15+ credit hours a semester and a 3.5g.p.a). I have great parents, but they can’t afford to pay for my insurance, gas, books and etc. Knowing this I have to work if I need transportation or anything outside of a bed to sleep in and food at home. I know the academies want physics and I wish I could take physics but, it would put me at 22 hours this semester.

Best of luck to you @Samvance3 you are in a tough situation.

My son never took physics and he was accepted to WP (class of 2020). Fit in what you can and that's all you can do.

Thank You for the response, I contacted my FFR and she stated that since I’ve met the criteria for sconces that it shouldn’t affect me in anyway. Regardless, I appreciate the response!
