Has there been any information on I-day for this summer, other than the date shown on the calendar - July 1? Whether it is similar to last year, or back to normal, should families be planning the trip now, or wait until more information is send out from the Academy?

The Permit To Report package will tell you everything you need to know about it, typically. It includes forms to fill out, and a host of other good information as to what sort of events are planned for parents and siblings to do before they see their new sweat-soaked Plebe in their whiteworks, later in the afternoon.

We just went back to the hotel and sipped a margarita by the pool, so I can't comment on the planned events.

The plebe summer leadership and detailers are working very hard right now to figure things out. It won’t be back to normal like two years ago, and it likely won’t be like last year’s truncated version either. But rest assured it will do the job of turning you into a functional midshipman in the time allotted and within prudent health parameters.

OK to make reservations now — I presume for your loved ones to see you off — but make sure they’re flexible and/or refundable.

You're my kind of people! No picnic, no Supe briefing, no wandering the campus looking for our forlorn little sailor in his new white works. Yuengling and big fat meatball subs at the AirBnB was where you could find us!

From what I can tell, hotels are going quickly and at a premium. I believe the Westin is 450+/night. Might as well book something now and make sure it’s refundable as others have suggested.

Even made reservations for dinner for the 30th at a place to celebrate the sendoff as I’m sure the demand will be very high. Sorry, we are planners.

If you think you might come back for the end of the plebe summer or football games, not a bad time to find housing. See you July 1.

We never stay in downtown Annapolis. We stay at the Doubletree by Hilton off of Riva Road. Literally 10 minutes to the stadium. If things are normal, we took the free shuttle bus from the Stadium to Alumni Hall. We stayed a few days before and visited Washington DC too. https://www.hilton.com/en/hotels/an...ce=1_MTM3Mjc0Ny00NjItbG9jYXRpb24ud2Vic2l0ZQ==

Right now the plan is to have the plebes quarantine for a week at the beginning of plebe summer in Bancroft. This quarantine will not occur if 85% of the plebe class is vaccinated prior to I-Day.

However, everything is VERY subject to change right now.

Hopefully the incoming class (and the state they call home) will be proactive in getting vaccinated. DS is scheduled for first dose early next week.

I was going to schedule my DD for Covid vaccine but she got 2 vaccines a week ago and has to have 2 more in the next few weeks. I have talked to numerous drs snd the Covid vaccine can’t be given within 2 weeks of any other vaccines on either end. So 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after. The appointees need a polio IPV booster after age 17. Also need to be TB tested after January of this year. If you google USNA immunizations there is a document that comes up with all vaccines needed for I day. Anyway just FYI for anyone else needing to get their kids vaccinated for I day. My DD has not received anything from USNA yet but I knew she was lacking some vaccines so we made appointments to get them done.

Correct - Given the lack of data on the safety and efficacy of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines administered simultaneously with other vaccines, the vaccine series should be administered alone with a minimum interval of 14 days before or after administration with any other vaccines. Currently, the only EUA vaccine for 16-17yos is Pfizer-Biontech, a mRNA vaccine (unlike J&J, but that has not rcvd EUA yet for 16-17yos).

In the case of DS, his CV19 vaccines will be complete by the end of April, prior to acceptance 01May2021 deadline, and should afford adequate time to complete other immunization requirements.

In arguing for vaccination- if an appointee tests positive for COVID-19 between now and I-day, then there are DoDMERB etc repercussions that will need to be dealt with. DS is tested weekly because of sports, so even if asymptomatic he is at increased chance of a positive test, which we would like to avoid (not to mention if he were to become symptomatic or have longer duration symptoms).

I was told by a napster that NAPS got a brief from the supe today and don’t quote me but he said that they were most likely be no parents on I-Day but high chance that there is a plebe parents weekend. They are trying to guarantee ’21 a normal plebe summer with a light rom which would include 6-7 hours outside a day during that rom doing pt, drill, marching, etc.

Yes my DD is same getting tested all the time due to sports and school. Just going to wait to first of May for Covid since we already started all these other vaccines.

Ugh!!! We want to be there on I day!!!!

Even though we had our physician go over the vaccine list sent in the BFE and our son was current on all the required doses, he still got 2-3 on I-Day??? He has no idea what they gave him or exactly how many shots because he was wrapped up in the whole experience. All that to say, I wonder how the Covid vaccine will work if they administer it on I-Day with any other outstanding doses a P2B may need?

As someone who’s attended both events, if I had to choose, I’d choose Parents Weekend.

I-Day certainly has pomp and circumstance, mainly at the end, with the swearing-in and the march into Mother B. And of course there’s the emotion of “seeing DS/DD off.” But otherwise, it’s a rather uneventful day between when candidates walk into Alumni Hall and when they re-emerge for the oath ceremony.

On the other hand, Parents Weekend is three full days of face-to-face time in which you can behold the midshipman that DS/DD has become. They’ll have stories to tell, tales to recount, episodes to share. It’s all so fun and satisfying to see their transformation — how they talk, carry themselves and deal with others.

Yes, ideally you’d be able to go to both. They’re both wonderful milestones. But again, the personal time of Parents Weekend trumps the ceremony of I-Day, at least in my mind.

Yes I have heard that. There is one vaccine they all get that is not available to the general public. I have talked to 5 different drs that all say no vaccines 2 weeks before or after of Covid so not sure how usna will do that. My kid will be vaccinate completely by I day.

It would be nice as a parent to be there on the yard on I-day. That being said, in my own experience- I travelled from BFE (not the envelope kind) Idaho to SLC, UT and then onto MCRD San Diego by my lonesome arriving on the yellow footprints with my fellow soon to be silver bullets. I made it and survived. I am betting my DS will persevere as well.

I feel the angst for 2025 moms, dads, sibs and soon to be plebes. It was tough as a 2024 to miss all the milestones. Still missing them today, limited to no liberty, no one allowed on the Yard, etc. I hope to be able to make up for some of that with visits in the future. Hang in there, at the end of the day, your plebe will be okay, and you will too.
Ours flew out alone and walked his butt through the gate solo. He survived and as much as one can thrive during Covid restrictions as a plebe...he is.
Hang on to the remaining time with your kiddo with both hands. Make some memories before they head out. That is vital for all parties.

So very true!! We are trying to embrace every moment right now. If it’s a drop off on I day we will survive just want to have normalcy for the current mids and plebes to be this July 1.

Thank you for this perspective! Taking in all the new possibilities and information feels much like the phrase “drinking water through a fire hose!” This kind of perspective is helpful as we prepare for July.
