I Day Vaccination Question

I got a shot (part of the immunization section of permit to report packet) and had a bad reaction where my shoulder is swollen up (doc says it isnt uncommon). I've just been thinking of how it would be really bad if I had to do max pushups right now.

This led me to ask if on Induction day after vaccinations, what is the time frame between that and when plebes are doing strenuous physical activity? Would just paying for as many vaccinations as possible before I Day be a smart strategy that other candidates use?

I cannot recall DS indicating when you might intentionally find yourself on your face etc, it'll be soon enough, but nonetheless you'll have a busy and physical day(s) running and lugging around your new "stuff"- you'll probably be so distracted you won't even notice a sore arm. That being said, I believe it's a wise choice to get as many of your vaccinations/immunizations out of the way before I-Day if possible.

We worked hard to get incoming plebe any missing vaccines prior to I day just to space them out and to try to avoid any reactions from them. Most (if not all) should be covered by your health insurance as they are pretty standard. Good luck!

You would just show your detailer and they would adjust as necessary. One thing that many folks that I served with did was to do a set of pushups just after getting an injection in the arm which they said would move the "stuff" through their system and avoid some of what you described.

My advice (as always) -worry about what you can control. You will get shots, you will have PEP and get PT'd, and nobody is going to be looking at the clock to see if its been XXX minutes since you had shots (unless of course, the Dr.'s recommend waiting, in which case it will be built into the schedule....the entire Plebe Summer program is pretty carefully choreographed). Of course, one of the primary concerns is safety and well being of the Midshipmen, so you will be taken care of .

I and a lot of my company mates got shots over plebe summer which hurt a couple of our arms quite a bit. We still did pushups that same day and although it was a little uncomfortable it will not kill you. I do not think any of us wanted to be the one to stick our hand out and ask to not do push ups because our arm hurt.

You know what might get more of your I-Day attention than doing push-ups shortly after getting shots? Folding endless pairs of socks. 🥴 As noted above, worry about what you can control. This is simply not worth fretting about.

We did our first pushups after coming back on deck after the oath ceremony. If you are having a serious reaction, then you will be cared for if you talk to your detailers (safety is the #1 priority, you have to remember that they could get in really big trouble if something happened to you on their watch!), but if it's just sore honestly you don't have much time to think for yourself so you'll probably just forget about it. I don't know anyone who purposefully got as many vaccines as possible before I-Day, but if it makes you feel better, you don't start doing PEP right away and there are strict rules on the number of pushups they're allowed to make you do per a certain amount of time and number of cycles/day.

It is still a lot though. Add in a nice humid Annapolis day and the sweat will easily start making your hands slip on the tile floor. Good thing there are mops… granted they just spread the sweat around instead of soaking it up…
