I Day

3 Airports

So, my family can either attend I Day or PPW. From the looks of this post I should tell them to wait for PPW. In either case, does anyone have any insight on getting relativly cheap tickets for the flight up to Annapolis. I come from a larger family (four siblings) and they all want to come up.

There are 3 airports that serve the Annapolis area. They are Baltimore-Washington International, approx 30 mins from USNA, Reagan National, in Washington DC and about 45 mins from Annapolis and Washinton Dulles International, about 75 mins from Annapolis that lies west of DC approx 20 miles. All 3 airports have service from all the major airlines. Flights in and out of Baltimore tend to be the most expensive, while Reagan flights tend to be somewhat less and flights in and out of Dulles the least expensive. Depending on where you are traveling from may determine the best airline for you. Check the airlines' web pages and other travel websites and start looking at fares now. Air fares will rise as the busy summer travel season approaches. Good luck.

It's both. As a parent you realize that I-Day is the culmination of your childs' childhood years and dreams. They worked hard to be at that place on that day. You a very very proud.

At the same time you have a huge sense of loss. The family time you all shared will never be the same again. Even today my daughter refers to her I-Day as the day her childhood came to an abrupt end. This is one of the major differences in haveing your child attend a service acedmy vs. a regular college.

For me and my DS, I-day was huge. DS’s reporting time was very early (I think 6:30 am) and we had a long busy day, but it was 100% worth for me to attend I-day. I-day was the day my DS transformed from a civilian high school boy to a Midshipman of the Naval Academy. I waited for my DS to get off the bus (USNA transported Plebes from Alumni Hall to Bancroft Hall by bus) in front of the Mids store. When my DS got off the bus, I first could not recognize my own son. It was not because his hair was shaved with a dixie cup on wearing white works, but it was because he became a different man. I had never seen my DS so serious and focused in my life.

When the big tall door of Mother B (Bancroft Hall) closed, I did not cry. I was so relieved to see the closure of the long application journey and beginning of my DS’s new life. I was worried about my DS every single day hoping he would not get injured (he played hard contact sports), therefore, the fact he inducted to USNA took a big responsibility off from my shoulder.

PPW is good for grand parents and siblings. You spend most of your days at a hotel with your Plebe. Of course, if you want to see things, there are many events at USNA and many places to see, but it is not like an I-day that you must hold your spot sitting under the sun for a long time to watch the Induction ceremony. I was happy to see my healthy and good looking Plebe in summer white uniform. He did nothing but sleep, watch TV, and eat during the PPW.

Dear USNA2016Dad,
Thanks for the info about the 3 airports in the USNA area. We're planning to bring younger sibs to PPW and we were amazed at the difference in the cost of flights to the three airports. We compared ticket prices for the same arrival/departure day and one airport was over $100 dollars cheaper per ticket (RT). With four of us (dad, mom and 2 younger sibs) planning to attend PPW, arriving at a different airport could save us almost $500.00! Really appreciated the info about distance/drive times.

You're Welcome

You're welcome. Congrats on the appointment. You may hear people say, strap in and enjoy the roller coaster ride. I like to look at it as an amazing journey of discovery and revelation. Either way, good times ahead for all involved. Cheers.

For what its worth we always flew into BWI after first tries with both Dulles and DCA
