I-Day

Hello. I have a quick question regarding I-day and specifically arrival. My hotel is like 2.5 miles away from the Academy. Right now, I have the generic 7:00 am show up time on the 30th. I know that it may change to be later but for the purpose of this thread, i'll just keep it at 7:00 am.
- On the 30th, is there a large shortage of taxis or some types of transportation because everyone is going to be calling for one?
I've never been out to the Academy and the last thing I want to happen is that I'm not able to get there. I called the hotel and asked if they maybe had a shuttle bus or something but they just said that the taxis would be there.
-Looking in this packet of information I have, it says that yellow cab is the only company that has approval access to the base. Does that mean that if I took another companies taxi, that I would be dropped off at the front gate?
-How much time before 7:00 am should I call the taxi?
-Should I have it be at the Hotel at 6 to assume I arrive by 7? I imagine there is a lot of traffic and congestion on I-day but I've never been so I don't know.
-What happens if I arrive at the Academy before 7:00 am but because of the traffic I am processed in after 7?

Sorry about the specific questions. I've never been in this situation and I'm trying to find out some info before I get there and am stuck. Thank you

Once you receive your report time, you can call the cab company and schedule a pickup time a few days ahead of time. When we dropped our DS off last year, we expected a lot of traffic. That wasn't the case (his report time was around 10:00). We were just a few miles away, left an hour early and breezed right in. I believe there are a couple of cab companies approved, but I would go with USAFA's recommendation.

If your report time happens to be at 7:00, they will let you in through the gate before 7:00. All of the details will be provided once you receive your reporting package. Please keep in mind that USAFA has been doing this for many, many years and they have a system. Also, get used to the military life and processes. You will receive the information you need, but it might not be in the time frame you would like it.......Enjoy your time before I-Day.

The Bed & Breakfast program is awesome, but if you do stay in a hotel, there may be other people heading to USAFA from there since there are about 1200 people coming for I-Day. If you do take a cab, take one with gate access because neither North Gate nor South Gate is remotely close to where you will be checking in.

You hotel may even have a shuttle to take you (arrange ahead of time). But seriously, what Stealth says is right. Why eschew the B&B program?

As a backup plan, there will be plenty of parents taking their DDs/DSs to the Academy on I-Day. If you are in contact with other appointees via FB and need a ride, you can coordinate with them to talk with their parents for a ride. I'm sure many of us would be happy to help.

Thanks for the ideas. I booked my reservation at the hotel much earlier than I had found out about the Bed and breakfast program so I'm just going to stay with the hotel. I'll call the cab company once I receive my time to arrange for a pickup.

Do you know of any specific FB pages to look at? I don't have a facebook. Is there a general one for 2020 or is it split up like with the parent associations?I'll probably make one and join just in case something happens. Thank you

There appears to be an Appointee Class of 2020 "Closed Group" you can request to be a part of. The moderator tries to screen requests to make sure they are Appointees and not Cadre trying to infiltrate their FB page. You will be able to determine how successful they are in screening during BCT when Cadre bring up things that were posted and who posted them....There should also be a "closed or private" FB Group for parents of the Class of 2020. This is another resource for parents who have kids going through USAFA.
