I don't mean to annoy anyone, but help - transferring

Thank you, I appreciate all the advice - again thank you.

I just have a few questions, I'm sorry for the inconvenience...

- Can you explain the ROTC nomination process? I'm not well versed in it I'm afraid, if you could explain it - it would be greatly appreciated. And would doing ROTC hurt my application at all? Or can it only help?
- should I retake the SAT's? Or does USMA care more about my actual grades in school?

Thanks again.

jct95, did you read buff81's lengthy post? She has spelled out exactly what you need to do and she specifically addressed your SAT questions. Yet you have just asked "should I retake the SATs?" You keep apologizing for being annoying but it IS annoying when folks take the time to answer your questions and then you ask the questions again!!

A current USMA cadet suggested early on to you that you read the USMA stickies at the top of the USMA section. Buff 81 was gracious enough to list everything for you in your current post. Buff81 is a Field Force Representative and is giving you the official information. PLEASE read it!!!

Put your ROTC question in the ROTC portion of the forum. And no, applying for an ROTC scholarship does not hurt your USMA application.

Stupid questions, I'm sorry for annoying anyone.

My question for you is, how hard is it for a Candidate to get a college professor to write them a LOR? Is it really that impossible? Thanks.

College professors are very approachable. However, they will not smile kindly upon you if you ask the same questions over and over without taking time to listen to the guidance and information they will offer you. You need to be a self-starter and get away from trying to get folks to spoon-feed you information.

My civvie kid needed recommendations from professors for grad school and they were all delighted to do so and could speak in detail about his abilities. He got to know them early in the semester and then stayed in touch in the coming years. And this was at a very large state university.

So be respectful, be quiet, and try to get to know them. Provided I do that, then they'll be willing to write a LOR. Understood. Thanks.

- Can you explain the ROTC nomination process? .

West Point can accept upto 20 Army JROTC/SROTC cadets per year. This is an appointment category, other categories are Presidential, Congressional, Superintendent, and etc. So Army JROTC/SROTC can nominate many cadets as they want. The PMS, professor of military science, just have to fill out a form. So if you join the ROTC and if your PMS endorses you, you have a ROTC nomination.

What I caution candidates is to not to say I want a nomation to West Point on your first day at the ROTC program. Might give a wrong impression that you only joined ROTC to get West Point nomination. Most ROTC PMS are supportive of cadets applying to West Point, but there are exceptions.

Understood. How competitive is it to be one of those 20 ROTC noms?

Considering that you are applying against an unlimited number of Senior and Junior ROTC nominations nationwide - often times in the Senior case of individuals who just missed getting in the year prior plus all the candidates that went to Civil Prep - you realistically have better odds getting in with your congressional rep and/or senators.

Does having two nominations, help, or worsen your situation? Thanks.

There certain exceptions of certain appointments being not competitive. For example, if one or both of your parents was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, you just have to be qualified to get an appointment. Or childern of 100% Disabled Vets, Combat related, is a separate nomination category. Again, just have to be qualified to get an appointment.

Or even in a competitive category, Congressional, if you live in a less competitive district, not all districts send cadets to West Point every year. Some urban Congressional districts are known to not even nominate any one for a long time. Of course, this will require your parents to move.

So unless you are lucky, any category you will compete will be competitive. Difference with getting a ROTC nomination is that you can compete in another category beyound just your Congressional nomination. It's like playing a lottery, instead of one ticket, now you got two tickets.

Thanks for all the help. Anyway, Having two tickets won't hurt my chances.

Some advice on SAT scores...

What would be an acceptable SAT score(s) to receive an appointment at USMA?

Depends what else you bring to the table. Are you a recruited corps squad athlete in a $ generating sport? You can get by w/ less. Are you a band nerd with no sports? You better top it out. The averages are posted in the class overview link on the USMA webpage.

Good grief! Go to the USMA Web site and look at the various class profiles starting with the most recent. It's right there in black and white.

Until we stop answering, jct95 will keep on asking. Guess this is more interesting than browsing us a website

One question, is Calculus an absolute necessary class in order for you to be seriously considered at a chance at being admitted? Can pre-calc or math serve as a substitute?

If there are 10 positions, and 11 people applying... and 10/11 took calculus while one took "math," I would guess the 10 with calc under their belts are picked.

It's safe to assume that many of the people applying have taken at least one year of calculus, and not taking it makes you less competitive.
