i was offered a type 7 scholarship, but when i got it i wasn't even excited!!! i know it is a big achievment, but after thinking about it, its almost like i was born and raised to attend USAFA, and i just cant accept anything less. besides, my scholarship will only fund me up to 9000 or full in-state tuition. this basically means UCLA if i dont get into the academy and if i get accepted to UCLA. i know scholarships pay for tuition, but what about if i want to live on campus? do they pay my room and board as well?

NO

Have you added in merit scholarships. DS has received merit scholarship, (some over 11K)from ea college, so you should get room & board covered. Add in FAFSA, and you should get close to paying nothing. Even with no FAFSA, we are looking at paying very little money in OOS. Unfortunately for us, he only applied for OOS and private.

So if a USAFA appointment doesn't come this year, you are going to try again next year, right?

Don't give up until they tell you that you can't apply anymore.

Have you checked the list above some schools like Miami, ITT and Tulane offer free room and board. Some school you can still apply, but deadlines have pass for some.

The thin letters will be coming out in a week or so. Last years letter was dated March 25, 2007. We went through this last year and took a solid plan B and moved on. Son had plan to reapply too, but loves UF. The ROTC det. is very good and they have had a better that average selection rate for UPT.

It sucks, but life doesn't always go the way you want. My Son's co-capt for lax also got a thin letter and they licked their wounds together, both received type 2 scholarships. Friend/co-capt. is at VT Tech in the corp he likes it.

Very true JAM

Our DS got a trustee scholarship for 11k to UM, add in a rotc scholarship, plus other scholarships and it is a free ride OOS, although he has already decided against UM.

UMD also gave a scholarship..this one will cost a little, but we can pay for it with the mutuals we put away, in other words looks like another free ride for OOS.

Notre Dame promises all students a free education for FAFSA students. So if you get accepted to a private and can't use the scholarship, double check with the school, you can still be in ROTC, you are just getting scholarships in a different manner

AFROTC will still be meeting one more time in April.

Most importantly before you go ugggh I didn't want to go there, make sure you check out the det. afterall, you will spend alot of time there. Bullet spent his free time with his det. and that became his social circle.

No, but his regional said as of last week (Thursday), that they hadn't gotten to him yet...uggh! She said to hold tight, and they were hoping to finish the first appts by the 1st of April

if i dont make it to usafa this year, i am definitely going to re-apply. i wonder if i can do a year of ROTC and then go to USAFA. But it would definitely be a bummer if i didnt get in this year considering all that work i have done this year to get in....

and i thought the USAFA panel reviewed applications as they came in?

Yes, they do, but in our ds's case, several applicants didn't submit until Mar. 1 who had the same nom sources. Thus, they didn't have a WCS yet, which means they couldn't get to DS. Plus he added more things and a new gpa and rank on Feb 27th

well my application was complete feb. 20 something but my medical just got qualified last friday. and i sent my updated GPA a few weeks back (before march 1) but my GPA hasn't adjusted on my online application. should i call?

I can't answer that...for our son, he had additional EC's and leadership added besides his rank changing. I know that his was sent Feb 29th. I would just sit tight, it is hard to due, but remember they have to give about 1200 appts. in March + prep school. Add in the dimension of multiple noms, it is like making a puzzle and they are trying to get everyone in that would make the best class.

As far as paying for college with the scholarship goes there are a LOT of schools (especially in the midwest) who will cap your tution so you can afford to go there even if you're out of state. Of the ones already named I know OU and OK state both do but there are probably more closer to you out in CA. Additionally with reappling to AFA don't forget that you don't occur any debt to the AF until the beginning of your sophmore year and I would assume that would be "forgiven" if you ended up with AF through AFA.
Out of couriosity did you get accepted on the 2nd or 3rd ROTC board?

I forgot to say the regional said that they do send a rejection letter, if you are totally out of the running. Your online will also change. So as long as you don't get the we are sorry letter you are still in the running.

i got my scholarship offer march 7 or something. so pima, there is a good chance that most appointments made in the month of march will be handed out in late march early april?

I would think they will start really rolling out this week, but the regional said "quote they were hoping to have the 1st appts. and prep school done by the 1st of April", then they will start handing out appt.s to those who have said no to acceptance, which could even start rolling in now. This of course makes them go back to the slate and offer the appt. to the next person. Remember some applicants will be offered appts to multiple SA's, they will have to decline their appt. This is why people will say that they received it the day before I day...they keep handing out appts. until they hit their magic number.

On CC someone has said they received a thin envelope today. They also stated that their online stat changed, and they called to see if it was positive. They were told basically no

ookay, i see. so when you say thin envelope you mean a letter of rejection to usafa? and there is one problem, my AFROTC place wants me to respond before to their offer by March 27. but if usafa sends out appointments the day before i-day, what should i do?

No problem at all - go ahead and accept your AFROTC scholarship. If your appointment to USAFA comes through then that will supercede your scholarship and you just cancel it.

okay, that is good to know. now, if i dont get the appointment this year (:unhappy::confused::eek::frown::frown::frown::frown:) and i accept the ROTC scholarship and go to another college, can i still apply to USAFA the following year? because i have resolved to still apply again next year if i dont make it this year (see above emoticons) and want to know if i will have to do a year of J.C. (which is okay with me if it is what it takes) or if i can go to UCLA or some other university for a year and then re-apply. the way i see it, the college experience typically only happens once, and i want to make it the best i can and be the best darned air force pilot i can be. USAFA is the only place for me and i have decided that, no matter what, i WILL NOT settle for less. Through hell and high-water i will not accept anything but usafa for my academic career.

Yes you can reapply to AFA. I know at USNA something like 1/4-1/3 are accepted with some kind of post high school education. If you really want to go to AFA I would encourage you to keep re-applying so long as you still want to go and meet all of the requirements.

i can re-apply with no problems even if i am in ROTC?
