I like what I’ve read about USMC Commandant Neller,

But does this cross a line?

I like the idea of retaining talent and she sounds like a total bada$$, having completed the training. If she stays in, it would show a level of maturity and forbearance no institution should let go to waste.

I am curious how a personal phone call to Sgt. Weis would go over with her future colleagues as well as with the raters during training who made the ultimate decision.

I don’t have a problem with the CMC calling her. I would like to think her new friend would not affect my performance if I were her superior or peer.

Years ago on a ship of the line we had an HT3 whose dad was the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON). He was a great kid and hard worker who eventually retired as a chief. I asked him how he was treated in boot camp by the company commanders and others. He said they embarrassingly kissed up to him and tried showing favoritism. Some was intentional and others did it because they couldn’t help themselves. He just wanted a boot camp experience like every other recruit but the pressure of his dad’s position was too much for those he came in contact with. The MCPON visited us on the ship one day and fortunately it as on Wednesday when we were always treated to Bowen Battle Burgers. The best sliders on the waterfront.
