I submitted my final application over the weekend, but the application portal hasn't updated yet. How long does it usually take? Also, the early action deadline is October 15, so do I need to complete the interview by that date as well? And has the LOA (Letter of Assurance) processing already been completed?

If you're referring to the little checklist on the home page of your Bear's Den, that thing is notorious for not updating in a timely manner (if at all), so don't worry about that. What I would do, is send an email to your AO and Coach (if applicable) as a courtesy and let them know you have submitted your application.

Not everyone gets selected for an interview, but if you have, I'm sure that'll be on it's own timeline. The purpose of an interview would be to get a better feel for a candidate beyond the application, so logically that may occur after applications are submitted.

Regarding LOAs, I don't think there's necessarily a line in the sand for getting those out, but if what Cpt. Benke mentioned holds true, the bulk of the LOAs went out about 2 weeks ago.

Good luck to you!

Interviews are definitely separate. If USCGA decides they want to interview you to add to your application, then they would provide that list to the Admissions Partners. One of the Partners from your state would contact you to schedule an interview.

Thank you for the information :)

If not everyone gets selected for an interview, is it better to be selected or not? I'm sorry for such a silly question.

The interview is simply a way for them to learn more about you, your goals, interests, etc. As far as being better or not, it depends on how you look at it.

Many kids have enough interaction through AIM or other events that they feel they know them well enough that they don’t need an interview.

If you do get picked for an interview, at the very least they’re interested enough to talk to you more, so there’s that.

If selected, you have no choice but to do it if you want a chance of an appointment, so it’s a time to shine and tell your story. Conversely, it may not go great depending on your level of preparation.

That being said, I know enough folks who are admissions partners who conduct many of these interviews to know it’s not their goal to try to “get you” and make you sweat. They want to learn about you as an individual, your “why”, and how you can contribute to the academy and the service.

Don’t waste any energy worrying about that. It is what it is. Just take it as it comes and put your best foot forward!

There are no silly questions. For the most part. 😆

I have one more question. When I applied, I selected Early Action. When should I expect to receive the Early Action results? Additionally, if I’m not accepted through Early Action, will I be placed on a waitlist for consideration during Regular Admission, or will I be rejected with no further chance of appointment?

EA decision deadline is 12/23. By that date you’ll either have received an appointment, be rolled to regular decision, or get rejected. There aren’t typically a ton of rejections during EA since they need to see what the regular decision pool looks like.

The last couple of years, EA decisions have began rolling out the week of Thanksgiving. This year, however, there is talk of being a bit more aggressive and getting them rolling out at the end of October. We’ll see how that goes.

If you do receive an interview request, keep in mind that the Admissions Officer doing your interview does NOT get to see your application.
This is done on purpose so that they can judge other things about you such as how you carry yourself, your interviewing skills, how passionate you are about the Coast Guard, how good of a shipmate they think you'll be based on your answers, and other items that aren't just statistics and grades. So if you want your interviewer to know something about you, you need to tell them in the interview. The only information the interviewers have is your name and your high school.
