DS got his orders and travel info for AROTC LDAC today. They told him he needs to go to a military installation near our home and obtain an ID (CAC) card prior to departure. We live near major Navy bases so that's no problem, but they gave him no paperwork to take in order to obtain the CAC. Am I correct in assuming that they would have already entered his info into DEERS (or whatever they use these days) and he just needs to show up with ID to have his CAC issued?

Military ID Card

Leapyear,

In the past we have used this website to find a location for ID card issue. Get the details for the military installation near you and make an appointment. All the military installations near us in Illinois require an appointment.

This website will also identify the forms of identification required. As long as they can find your cadet in the 'system' there should be no issue getting an ID. The ID will not likely be a CAC.

They are giving CACs for LDAC? You sure it's not just the green ID?

He will need to bring his contract and possibly his orders. I have seen all sorts of nightmares with DEERs with cadets not even being in the system or paperwork lost. You will wait in line forever then be told to get the correct paperwork.

Seriously, don't ever rely on the system to make things go smoothly, it never happens.

Thanks for the replies. Actually it was me who assumed he would get a CAC, since I thought they stopped issuing the green cards years ago. We made an online appointment, and I told him to take his orders, two forms of picture ID, and be prepared to sit for a while. Especially the sitting part...

The contract he signed with ROTC is what he needs to bring. I'd take the orders, too. Cadets still get the old green IDs. In certain circumstances, some get CACs. I think they get them for CULP, but I'm not sure about other training. If a Cadet does manage to get their hands on a CAC, they should hold on to it for dear life. You need a CAC to access email and view your request for orders, among other things.

His orders should say if he is authorized a CAC card, otherwise he will just get the reserve (green) ID card.

Usually, only those attending CULP, NSTP and CTLT (in most cases) will be authorized a CAC (and any contracted cadet can get the green ID as soon as they contract). If he does get one, he'll be lucky. It's a pain in the ass to access anything without one.

Like said above, getting an ID can be a nightmare. He may have to go get put in DEERs before getting the card made. And then it's been mentioned before that his card could have him listed as anything from E-1 to E-6 or as a student. Don't worry about that, it doesn't matter what it says, he'll get a new one with his proper grade when he commissions.

My DS has just informed me that as of April 2014, the issuing of Green (Reserve) Cards has stopped for contracted cadets. The Cadet will be given a CAC with ROTC Student embossed on it, the grades will between E1-E6. Our DS is an E6, his best buddy who was next in line is only an E5, luck of the draw it would seem.

Just as a follow-up for anyone who is interested, DS did obtain his ID card this morning. He was in fact issued the old green card, and the Rank/Rate simply says "ROTC Student." It only has a one year expiration. He was already in DEERS, so all he had to do was show ID. He also said that that because he had made an appointment in RAPIDS, he went to the head of the line and was literally only there for 10 minutes. Definitely worth making the appointment.
