IEP question

I have recently learned that my IEP will be a problem with the CGA. I just finished the first AIM session and have started the CGA application process. From what I understand, dodmber will have me tell them that I have an IEP and why I have it, which will ultimately fail me right? I have done some research and noticed the best way to solve this problem would have been to close my IEP at the start of my JR year of HS. Unfortunately, I don't have a time machine.

Is all hope lost?

I don't know how to say this other than saying it straightforward. At a young age, I had trouble reading and spelling which might have been slightly dyslexia however I have never received an official diagnosis and do not take medication. After maturing and gaining a work ethic, I have not used my IEP really for anything except standardized test scores which I plan to take this upcoming August SAT without accommodations to submit to the CGA. Would closing my IEP now help at all if I plan on applying for early admissions October 15th.

Any information is appreciated. Thanks

You've had an IEP (which is required by law to be reviewed every year) for years and only used the standardized test accommodations? Something is wrong with that picture. Either your case manager has not been reviewing your situation very well, or you are not receiving services that you should have been receiving. In order to receive Specialized Education services from an IEP, you must be provided resources because IEPs are federally mandated and funded, I have some serious questions about this situtation.

If you really do not need the services, as a school counselor, I would absolutely recommend that you call an IEP meeting as soon as school starts and ask to be exited from the IEP. If you need the services, do not be ashamed of what you need to be successful and follow every path you can to reach success. Apply for CGA and make them disqualify you, ask for a waiver and make them deny it. Do whatever it takes to pursue your dreams. Don't let possibilities of denial stop you from trying. BEST OF LUCK to you! Go get them!

I really appreciate the encouragement. Thank you truly.
Could you elaborate on what you mean when you explain how I am not reviving services that I should with an IEP. On standardized tests I am required to have extra time however that isn’t the case for the classroom.
While the IEP is present extra time is not used on my behalf. Obviously dodmber and service academies can’t simply take my word for it which is why I I’m thinking of disabling my IEP right away.
Does dodmber defiantly always ask about IEPs and if so is it an imideate DQ for dodmber standards.?

You are posting in the correct forum, and with luck, Mr. Mullen, Deputy Director DoDMERB, will see your post and offer to communicate with you privately. He is about as official and authoritative a source as you could wish for.

In the meantime, do some reading. I believe these are the current accession standards.

At this link, start on page 46.

And, go to the DoDMERB home page, read every item in the left-hand side. Lots of great information there. Hit the “Continue” button.

There is a process. Information is power!

Send me an email: lawrence.e.mullen.civ@mail.mil (***ensure you type the email just as it looks. No extra “e” anywhere***Lawrence E Mullen); provide complete name and last 4 SSN; provide the text of your posting above to YOUR email.

The subject line of the email should be “Justin1235-SAF = IEP question.” Do NOT embed links in your email as I will not be able to view those. :wiggle:

Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are federally mandated by an educational act that provides students with disabilities services. Students who receive these services should receive the same accommodations throughout the school year in similar circumstances as they do on standardized tests. If you truly have an IEP, you should be getting the same accommodations on tests in the classroom as you do for standardized tests.
Some students do not need extra support in the classroom as far as specialized services (specialized instruction, academic monitoring, etc.) but have a disability that requires accommodations in the classroom and standardized tests. These students have a Section 504 plan in place. Even those students are required to receive the same testing accommodations in the classroom as they do on standardized tests.

I urge you to contact the person who is in charge of your IEP/504 and inquire about those services, whether it be to end them because you do not use/need them or to inquire about why you are not receiving them in the classroom. These services should be reviewed in an annual meeting each year with your parents, and now that you are older, yourself. There should be a conversation about how these measures have been put in place and there should be an evaluation of if they should be continued. If I were you, I'd start first with a conversation with my parents about the services and whether there has been a meeting each year, and go from there.

I believe I emailed you a few days ago. I’m wondering if it ended up in your spam as I defiantly wrote the subject as “Justin1235-SAF = IEP question.” Thanks

Be sure to actually type the email address as Mr. Mullen directed. Don’t copy and paste, because an extra “e” often gets added, unseen by you. He is very timely in responding to emails.

Correct. I have yet to receive the email from Justin 1235 :wiggle:
