Should I expect any more information for the Naval Academy now that applications for the class of 2024 opened up?

All answers are appreciated.

Last year when DS applied he received some information on becoming a candidate but I believe it was May.

Yes you should receive information. Have you been notified about summer seminar acceptance yet? There should be further instructions. In fact I seem to recall (memory only here) that the summer seminar application indicated that it is the initial candidate questionnaire, and to not open another one when application period opens (today!!!!!)

You will receive your Ecandidate packet letter most likely in May or June via email, giving you your log-in info for your application portal. It also contains some info on the application process. I recommend starting your application and looking through the different sections that need to be filled out when you receive the packet and have all sections under your control finished before the summer ends. Good luck!

Just for clarification..... DS applied for NASS and has not heard back. Does he submit a new application for 2024 that opened today? Thanks for any information you can provide.

He should be able to start his class of 2024 application now. I'd reccomend getting as much of the basic information submitted asap so there is no need to worry about it later and he can focus on getting nominations and letters of rec when the time comes later this year. Hope that was helpful.

This is on the USNA website when you click on the apply button. https://candidateinformation.usna.edu/ITSD/pcq/acawu013$.startup
It says, "NOTE: This is the Preliminary Application for admission to the United States Naval Academy. Please do not submit this application if you have already submitted a USNA Summer Seminar Application."

Another productive use of time while one waits to see if they are elevated to candidate status is to familiarize themselves with their MOC timelines.

So how are new credentials, grades and standardized scores made available for USNA admissions to be taken into account to be considered a candidate if you can't update your preliminary application?

How were the initial scores, etc? If they are good enough to open up a candidate portal, then IMO would wait until May/June when other posters said that portals tend to open up and then you can update. If you are unsure, then the bottom of the screen said to contact USNA.

Also, there are a few threads on this forum that could help you. I see that you are a very new member. Use the search feature on the forum to see past discussions on this topic.

I know AFA had a button to click if you wanted to use the summer seminar for your pre-application and there was a few threads on advantages and disadvantages depending on current scores, etc.
Good luck.

This is actually sort of incorrect. Since he has already applied for NASS, that application acts as his preliminary application for USNA (USAFA allows you to opportunity to choose whether to use your summer seminar application as your preliminary candidate questionnaire. USNA does not give you the option...it IS the preliminary candidate questionnaire). There is nothing to do at this point as far as applying since he has already applied for NASS.

At some point, you will be elevated to candidate status if you meet the initial criteria. You will be notified, and will then be able to begin the process of applying. All the links and instructions will be in your portal.

You can find minimum requirements for becoming an official candidate. They are stated. So if you meet those, no need to do anything else. All updating, etc will be done going forward through the application phase, after becoming an official candidate.

A quote from another post. It might be dated, but this is what I’ve seen from @ Old Navy BGO. If you know where they are stated, it might be helpful for some. Thanks.
I don't think USNA publishes its criteria for what qualifies as a official Candidate. There are a number for factors, including location and other demographics, but frankly I wouldn't expect that you would be "competitive" with those scores.

Question for you. So could we send the SAT scores, Transcripts (when available at the end of semester) without a candidate ID?

No. One needs to be a candidate first. That is where all the things you have mentioned will go. There will be links, etc. only accessible once you are a candidate. That will happen soon! DS completed all his things during his summer (before senior year).

Now is the time to get ready for all that. Think about who you would like to write recommendation letters, touch base with english, math and counselors about availability/best method of contact over the summer (they will have to complete online items).

Read and get a good understanding of the USNA.edu site. Same with the stickies at the top of the forums (GREAT info...). It seems impossible to do at the beginning of the process. But chipping away little by little gets it done. As a parent, I saw my role as keeping a DISTANT eye on things. This needs to be their journey, but it’s too big of one to let them mess up (one of the biggies is little Timmy self reporting every little bump and bruise, or disorder, he thinks he has/had on the medical inquiry....but I digress). This was our approach.

So getting ready is what you do now. Then wait (hahaha....and what a wait it is!!) for the next thing. Which in this case is promoted to Official Candidate.
