If you have to choose: R Day or A Day?

Not sure we can manage attending both. Thoughts on which event we should prioritize as parents?

A day. A day is about being w your kid and celebrating. R day you literally say good bye to your kid and don’t see him again. Your kid is better served coming alone so that his or her head can be ‘in the game’ when things start.

A Day. No regrets. Don’t think about it again.

A day although watching the oath formation and ceremony on R Day is pretty special too.

But you get time with your cadet on A Day weekend.

Also, for those who live near West Point you can attend the 4th of July concert, probably will be Saturday, 7 July. You can't interact with the CC's, but they normally march out to the concert.

A-Day. No question. R-Day is exciting, but sad. If you need to choose, say your good-byes, put them on a plane and say, "See you on A-Day!" A-Day is amazing and happy!

Also, it helps to know that not every family can make all the events and it's useful to know what the "big ones" are. If you're on this forum, or the West Point Moms Facebook page, it will look like everyone is there for every football game, March Back, Projects Day, etc. But they really aren't. Some people live super close, but most do not. For some people, this is their only child. For most, it's not. Do what you can and remember that other families will look after your cadet the same way that you would look out for others if you had the chance.

Definitely A Day. You will only see your cadet briefly on R-Day to hug goodbye and then again from a far distance at the Oath Ceremony. A Day you get to be with your cadet for about 12 hours on Saturday and again on Sunday from 5AM to 4-5 PM. The incredible WP Parent Liaison (on staff at WP) usually films the entire Oath Ceremony and airs it on the class parent facebook page. She also catches as many moments as she can through out the day - rain, shine, or unscheduled sprinkler systems do not stand in her way - and posts photos on the facebook page, instagram and twitter. If you haven't joined the class parent page on facebook, I highly recommend it. You will get the best and most accurate information as soon as it is available.

Been through it twice....A Day hands down and of all the other events in your Cadets career at USMA...I would also highly recommend Ring Weekend... and yes... that happens in the blink of an eye. CONGRATS and enjoy the ride!
