So, my son got his appointment! I am booking for A Day. It looks like IHG is my most affordable lodging option. There are two choices; Five Star Inn and Bldg 785. Which is better? What are the differences? The Thayer is out of our price range. Is there other lodging you would recommend above IHG that is somewhat affordable? Thanks in advance.

Both are run down. They are/were going to shut those two down and remodel them. I was told this last year. There are other nice options outside the area like Fishkill. (30 min drive).

You'll have a great time on A-Day! Leave a little extra early to get through the gates

We go low budget. We generally stay at the West Point Motel. Sometimes online doesn't reflect availability...so I call. Since they cannot spend the night and you have all the back and forth stuff, I prefer close by.

Holiday Inn Express, Fort Montgomery -- a 10 min drive to Thayer gate; usually a little higher $$ during R/A-day weekends, football game weekends, parent's weekend, graduation, etc. But if you can get in there and the price it right, it's close, convenient, clean and has breakfast.

Agree with both suggestions on the West Point Motel and the Holiday Inn Express in Fort Montgomery. Both are very convenient to get in and out of Thayer gate.

Also, for A Day if you want to get off post to an area where there is stuff to do, you can try the Hampton Inn Central Valley--right next to the Woodbury Commons outlet malls and a Walmart. Totally affordable, maybe a 20 minute drive. The other two buildings are run down but right there close to where you have to drop your cadet off and pick him/her up. If you don't mind run down, then stay for the cheap price and the convenience.

Anyone know anything about the Cadet Motel. Looks real basic which is fine. I just want clean. We're doing a lot of traveling from California (5 of us) between R-day and A-day so looking for areas where we can save a little.

West Point Motel. Running water, electricity, and you can't beat how close it is - a 5 or 10 minute walk to Thayer Gate, and maybe a 2 minute drive. The beds aren't bad, it's relatively clean, and if you're just using the place as somewhere to keep your crap and sleep, it's not a bad price. Just book soon - you'll be screwed by the prices if you wait too long.

Also look at airbnb. Cost will usually be a little higher than a hotel, but you usually get more room and a full kitchen which can save you some money.
Most left are on the east side of the river, so you will either need to take the bridge or the Garrison/West Point Ferry. Won't work for R-Day. May work for other visits.
If you do Facebook, search for West Point Harborcraft.

Isn't that the place that rents rooms by the 1/2 hour?

West Point's ferry is not a public ferry so parents who use it need to be escorted or met by their cadet (not always convenient for cadets during the week or on football Saturdays). I think it is difficult to visit West Point without a car because of the amount of walking you will have to do.

Authorized Users
• Cadets / Cadet Candidates
• Cadet Guests (Must be escorted or met at South Dock)
• Staff & Faculty (Currently assigned to West Point)
• Summer Troops (Cadet Summer Training)

Restrictions
 NOT A PUBLIC FERRY SERVICE
 MILITARY ID REQUIRED (Picture ID for Cadet Guests)

Never had them check. As written above, may be escorted or met at the dock.
I've used it from time to time, but yeah. You will do some hoofing when you arrive.

So I guess that's a no go on the Cadet Motel. It's close so I assumed it's used by visitors. I guess not. Luckily, it's refundable.
Thanks for the info.

Still waiting... no news yet on my status- do you suggest going ahead and making reservations? I don't want to jinx it, but I want to be ready- .....

Is it better to stay near the SWF airport or in Fishkill? Which location gives easier access to West Point?

We stayed at Holiday Inn Expresses in Montgomery (not Ft. Montgomery, there is a town of Montgomery near Stewart Airport) and Fishkill. Both are off I84 and about a 30 min drive to WP Thayer Gate. Fishkill was nice for Aday since a Walmart was nearby for my DS to buy supplies. Book early, they fill fast. It seems the area establishments know the days at WP that fill up, I think we paid around $190 / night.
