I just saw on the appointments page...Congratulations!! She actually called you? Must be a very good weekend at your house!!

Thank you! Yeah, I got a call from a number I didn't recognized that came from the Evanston area around 1:30. Great way to start the weekend! I'll be watching for your name on the appointment list next!!!

Keeping my fingers crossed...I appreciate the supportive vibe!! I hope your parents did something nice for ya this weekend or was it the old "when did you say your leaving?"

Congrats! I too am from Dist 9 and am going to apply (AFA class of 2022) to Congresswoman schakowsky for a nom as well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

It was definitely a shock for them - we aren't a military family or anything like that, so they had and still had a ton of questions. They're definitely supportive, and we did go out to a nice dinner to celebrate. There's going to be a lot of unknowns this next few months, but I guess that's part of the fun!

A lot of people say get the application done as soon as it opens up; I would definitely agree. I ended up getting all of my materials in about a couple days before the deadline...definitely nerve wracking. It takes some time to coordinate info with your school - in my case, my counselor never had any kid apply for a nom/appointment, so it was difficult trying to get them on board with everything I needed to do. Other than that, the actual application itself was fairly simple - there is an "optional" essay but I would highly recommend doing it. If you have any other questions I would be happy to help!

Make sure you start on application ASAP. They say it takes 5-6 months and they are 100% correct. Also, as was said before, if they mark something as "optional" it actually means "we highly suggest that you do this". Discover who your ALO is and keep in contact with them. Your ALO interview is basically a job interview that lasts for 3 hours!! Practice beforehand with parents, teacher at school or even your current employer if you are working. The questions asked can be found somewhere on this forum. Dress is business so basically your best clothes. Don't forget...you never get a second chance to make a first impression!! Be yourself and be confident.

We really aren't a military family either and the questions never stop!! Glad you got a good dinner out of it. I am sure they are proud but also nervous since this is a HUGE committment. It's your journey and they are also along for the ride. You'll do great...if you haven't already done it, go to Amazon.com and rent "A year in the blue" (its only $3.99). Follows the life of a fourth year cadet and has a lot of good info for you and your parents.

Yup, they are definitely nervous. I'm sure it'll go away with time. Thanks for the advice, I'll look into watching that with my family.
