Im probably too late so whats my options now?

In Chicago Obama (obviously :thumb:) and Durbin's deadlines were October 5th and October 31st, respectively. (so I missed them)
But my MOC is Dec 8th... and she decides on December 20th.
So I have NO IDEA when the interviews will be... any ideas?

Not all MOC conduct interviews.

If that's the case, the nominations will be based on the paper application, the recommendations, and the essay.

Shoot! I always do well on interviews...

I just checked, and I guess she doesn't - I checked for the word 'interview' and the search didn't come up with any hits on her Application Information pdf... :frown:

Katie -

Is there an email address where you can email the nominations manager for your Congresswoman? How about the application itself - is the process described in there?
Don't worry if she doesn't do interviews, just do a good job on the application.

Hi!

I didn't see anything here http://www.house.gov/schakowsky/academy.shtml or on her site in general, though there is an option of 'Email Me'... do I want to be emailing her?! Dyou guys think it goes to her?

OK  But what would a "good job" include? Just good grades and results and so on, right? B/c I doubt pretty handwriting matters

Okay - she does not do interviews as a part of the process. In fact, if you got a nomination from an IL senator, she will not consider you for another one.

Doing a good job -
Your grades and other achievements are done.
What you want to do is make sure you attend to detail. Print and read the entire application and instructions thoroughly. Type or print neatly.
In your case, be prepared to send in proof that you are a resident of her district, e.g. your birth certificate and your mother's voter registration card and an explanation of why you live in Austria (parent is UN employee) in addition to your application.

Send everything in one complete package and mail early so it gets there on time. Contact the college board and have them send your SAT's to her office directly - using the code she gives in the instructions.

Write the optional essay, limiting yourself to 300 words and write it well.
Accentuate the positive. She wants to see physical fitness so demonstrate that as well.
You are going to have to include an official (sealed) transcript and letter of recommendation as well - so you need to get with your guidance counselor.

At my daughter's school, she brought in her entire package and the GC mailed it off with the official transcripts.
make sure you mail yours early since you are mailing from overseas.

You have a lot of work to do in a short time.

That info is great!! I forwarded it to my GC so that we can do an intense 'apply to USNA!' session on Monday
But about the birth certificate - I was born in a different district, and my mother has made it clear she is not ok with me applying.
I am still pressing ahead - it is my life, and they've spent way too much time determining where I am going to go in life. Now I need to take over.
But so my only proof of residency is my grandmother's address in my MOC's district - that enough?

The birth certificate is to show you are a US Citizen.
You really should have some proof that your parent is a resident of the district. Perhaps the Congresswoman will accept your signature, perhaps not. I am just trying to be proactive since you have little time for delays.
Are you 18 yet? Registered to vote?
Are you keeping this from your Mom?

Lastly, all I described in the Congresswoman's application. You still need to complete the USNA application. Have you started that yet and gotten a candidate number?

I told my parents today, they freaked out and pretty much told me it's not what they want me to do and why don't I do this & that instead?

They don't know I've begun the application process and they don't know I'm continuing. By the time stuff starts arriving in the mail, I will have finished the nomination app and the CIS app (yep I have a Candidate number  have started filling it out, everything - and I mean everything will be in by next Friday or on it's way by mail :yay:!!) and it'll be pretty much set in stone.

I'll try to cajole her into getting me some proof. If not, my GC has offered to speak to my parents, reminding them that it really is my life, and not theirs.

And no, not 18 until April

update: my mom called my representative (Johnson 15th district of Illinois) turns out they do things late. they dont decide till the end of december, so Im still have a chance. When do i find out if i made it past the preapplication?

For me the Regional Director I was in contact with told me straight away in an email so I could start applying straight away as stuff just takes SOO long to get from Europe to the States, you'd think in this day and age we could at least get something as old as the postal system right

Call Admissions and ask them, with the excuse that you're so late, you need to get started now (to have a chance with noms, etc)... :thumb:

I guess usually you'd find out by the actual application coming in the mail, or?

navy1314 - you should receive a letter shortly from the Naval Academy - about a week or so after you complete the initial pre-application.

You have plenty of time to get your academy applications done - they are not actually due until Feb. You must get your nomination applications completed asap.
YOU can get a nomination if you have not completed your academy application.

Ill fill out my nomination application tomorrow. The rep for the congressman's office said he'd be able to come to my school monday to retreive all my letters of recomendation, ACT scores and my transcript and such. Thanks for the info, I thought I had to wait to get the official application

also some of you mentioned an essay? where is that located on the form?

The essay, if required, would be part of the application. You would not be able to miss it I'm sure. There may be some reps and/or senators that don't require one.

ok I looked and I didnt see one. Alright next question is it necessary to contact my area BGO? I talked to my representatives office and I'll be able to turn all my applications into his office monday. So that leaves the actual application.

YES! Contact your BGO -- they know the process as it applies to YOU and are there to help you get through the process!

But wait... has s/he been assigned yet?! You haven't even gotten the application package...

oh ok i see what you mean. I looked up my zip code and found there is a specific one here in Illinois for the zip codes. Is there a chance I could be assigned a different one?

No idea, but I was assigned a different Regional Director than I thought I would be getting....

Where in IL? I'm IL-09 for Congressional noms..
