DS just rec’d phone cal yesterday from MOC so we haven’t seen anything in writing or have access to anything on the portal, but was curious about a few important & upcoming dates. I saw on another thread, R day is July 1.... is this something I should invite his grandparents to? Is it just drop off or is it more ceremonial? ( FYI... my parents are in pretty good shape but just didn’t know if there was anything interesting for them).

On a similar note, when is A day and is this something to invite siblings & grandparents to?

Any other important dates to keep in mind, greatly appreciate!

Congratulations! R day is a long day. My DS reported at 6AM. The parade onto the field is at 6PM. We spent the day waljing around WP. I would recommend leaving the family home for Rday and bringing them to A day. R day can be a very tough emotional day for cadet and parents. A day is the best day!! Fun for everyone. You may, however, spend hours watching your cadet sleep and doing laundry. Still the best day.

Can anyone confirm the dates for (1) the "March back" (2) "A Day" None of the published calendars that I've seen have been updated

This might be a silly question, but what happens after A-day? Do the plebes have a few days off, get right into classes? Do they need to stay on site? Can family friends visit? I ask bc we usually take our family vaca after that weekend, so if DS cannot do anything then I should maybe still keep our week and go with his siblings. If he can have visitors and/or leave campus, maybe we should stay in the area and even try to have a few friends visit him. If anyone can chime in to clarify what happens in the days & weeks after Beast & A-day, I'd love to hear:)

An official published calendar is slated to come out sometime in April.

@serviceaboveAll - your cadet will have very limited privileges. You cadet will not be able to join you for a vacation. The cadets have a modicum of privileges the weekend of A day and then they start right in with the work that WP has for them.

Ty! I realize DS wasn’t joining us for vacation. I was just thinking if he had a few days before classes started, I’d arrange for family & friends to be up there ( near him) to be able to “hang”. It sounds like only a little during the day on Sat (A-day) and during the day Sunday. Good to know! Thx again!

    R-Day is July 1
March Back for A-Day will be 8/12
Family day for A-Day weekend is 8/16 the time hasn’t been released yet
A-Day graduation has been released it’s 8/17 ... time has not yet. DD/DS will be released to us once they graduate till a certain time then they report back. And then we can get them again on Sunday.
Family weekend is Oct 25-27 for all classes.

On A-day weekend the Plebes will be so exhausted they will only want to sleep & catch up with their immediate family. From what I’ve heard they will want to eat a ton & sleep I very seriously doubt they want to do a ton of socializing with others. JMO & from my others who have told us.

Think a day is different for each cadet. My '18 and '19 were ready to get off post and neither brought laundry nor slept. Had a great time taking them out for dinner.

Had some extended family attend and we had plenty of time to see the post as well as getting off post for lunch/dinner and had some great one on one time.

One tip - prearrange a place to meet following the a day parade (incredible event). We always met at the Patton statue near the library.

    Congrats and enjoy the ride!

Here is a tip if your cadet does have a bunch of A-Day laundry like mine did , we dropped off all his laundry at West Point laundry on Main St at 9am Sunday and got it all back at 4.. Was well worth the money to have the day to spend with him and still send him back with everything clean and folded.. Another tip do not make plans in advance, your cadet has just gone through a difficult summer mentally and physically . Let him/her dictate how much or how little they want to do.. For ours food and sleep were definitely the priorities..

Do the cadets get to stay off site for A-Day weekend? Trying to decide on hotel details.

The cadets have OPP - off post privileges - after they are released after the parade till taps on Saturday. Sunday typically is early am until 17:00ish. The academic year starts the next day and many prefer to return earlier and get organized. My son had homework due to the first day. The Thayer method at work!

Thanks for the information. I'm sure more detail will be forthcoming in the near future.
We are bringing both sets of grandparents to A-Day. All are 80+ and in pretty good shape as far as mobility; but, this adds a new level of stress given all the unknowns. We anticipate arriving on Friday, and will stay until Sunday. Is that typically a reasonable window? If family day is Friday, 8-16, maybe we should plan to arrive Thursday night? Any information regarding past experiences would be appreciated. For instance, are the cadets accessible on family day? How do we contact them to arrange meetings? (Are their cell phones returned by then?) Thanks in advance for your patience and replies.

Cell phones are typically returned Monday after march back but there are company expectations for knowledge, etc before the new cadets receive them. For the 2021 year, we did not see our son on the Friday before A Day. If any of the grandparents have a handicapped pass, try and use the vehicle it is registered to. My mom was in her early 80’s and the distances were tough when it was super hot. We dropped her off at the parade field and parked the car as we didn’t have her vehicle. We met our son at Trophy Point along with lots of other families. A Day weekend is amazing. Bring water and sunscreen for the parade.

With 2 sets of grandparents I would try to rent a house. Inventory is limited in highland falls. Try garrison, cold springs, beacon, or to the west near Woodbury. Your cadet can relax out of uniform with family in a house. Needs to be in uniform in public. Will need to be on post Saturday night 11pm or 1 am ( I don’t remember) until 5:30 am. So you have to drive back. If you can travel Thursday, you won’t be subject to the anxiety of getting delayed and missing the parade. We had friends who had a cancellation and ended up renting a car in Detroit and driving all night. Thunderstorms.

Your plebe will not be able to spend will not be able to spend the night with you Saturday night. We stayed in Fishkill with our 2020. In addition to decent dining options, the Walmart was nearby. The plebes are allowed one electronic item. My 2020 and his roommates decided who was going to get what, mine wanted a Keurig. I dropped him off Saturday night and was back Sunday am as soon as he could be released.
