Important matters concerning the existence of Humanity - BACON

I am subbing in culinary today and my upper level teacher aides are cooking themselves breakfast. The smell of bacon being cooked is making the students grumble. The percs of being a TA, and of being the sub. I get to direct them to cook bacon for me, and they have to clean it all up. Winning!!!!

I do NOT own FB stock. I do however, have a lot of SMALL PHARMA. :)

DW and I are driving cross-country (well, much of it) to Naptown next week. It’s a little “empty-nester adventure” born of her excess PTO and my somewhat flexible work schedule. We’re stopping in Kansas City, so of course I’m researching great BBQ. One place I found makes a sandwich with pulled pork, brisket, onion rings and…wait for it…thick-cut bacon! And the photos look divine. So that place is definitely on the consideration list.

If anyone needs any virtual Wright’s…apparently I am now compelled to lean into chillers and snap photos of Wright’s bacon. This is Sam’s Club, 4 lbs for about $25 plus 6% sales tax. I was in there today doing serious shopping. We now have 14 people coming for breakfast tomorrow morning, all USNA alumni sponsor family, spouses, some kids, all back for reunions. Time to stock up on tubs of mini-cinni rolls and extra fruit to round out the buffet.

I think my Ft. Meade Commissary price from the other day is an excellent deal.

HANDS down, our fav, of all visited in the area, is Jack Stack. And there are 5 locations. Not sure if they are all good, but the one south of I70 is the one we go to. We never let an opportunity go by when we drove through. Gates BBQ has the name recognition, but locals sent us the Jack Stack route and we have never gone to another BBQ joint since. We have dined in, and carried out and eaten in the car…both equally good!!

Gates is overrated imo. In fact, not a fan at all.

The other that is good is out of an old gas station. Joe’s BBQ. But there is always a loooong wait. Even for phone in orders. Neat ambiance. It has been featured on foodie shows. Not recalling which at the moment.

Adding this link: Jack Stacks is ranked 2nd best. Haven’t tried #1.

BBQ deserves its own thread, though it and bacon have a natural affinity.

There is an inordinate amount of bacon featured in many locations spotlighted by Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” Bookmark the handy website for use while traveling. When I traveled 50-60% for business during my corporate years, I challenged myself to not eat at chains but to seek out local delights.

Yesssss!! I’ve been to a few of those. And only a few, bc I don’t travel much. But we also search those out. Had the juicy Lucy edition (with bacon) in MSP. Gates in KC (I’m sure I had bacon, was in a meat coma, so can’t be certain), and of choice Chick and Ruth’s in Annapolis (for sure bacon there).

All roads lead to bacon 🥓 😂

I'll second Jack Stacks. Been to KC a few times and always make a stop there. I'm a fan of their football and baseball teams. Had some really excellent chicken and waffles there too, but can't remember the name of the place.

Just what is an "inordinate amount of bacon"??? That sounds like heresy and could just get you banned.

“Inordinate” in this context is a good thing. No bad connotations attach. Excess is good. Ex: Bacon waffles with extra bacon and a side of bacon at Grump’s for breakfast on a Saturday morning in Annapolis. With a bacon Bloody Mary. Perfectly normal excess.

Thank you for clearing that up. I was in shock seeing that and just KNEW there had to be a misunderstanding.

Btw…a few of those are actually Man Vs Food features. Past the edit window. But another fun foodie adventure!

Personally I would watch a Bacon Foodie travel show!

Sausage strips = Bacon?

They are both pork. Clearly, in advertising, they are trying to put saussage strips out there as bacon. But I’m not buying it (not literally. I did buy it).

Great call, @justdoit19! Jack Stack is more polished and buttoned down than your typical BBQ joint (no metal trays!) but it was top notch all around. DW and I split a rack of spareribs plus brisket, which was preceded by an app of burnt ends — beef and pork — and accompanied by creamed corn, baked beans, steamed broccoli and onion rings. The meat was delightful but the most impressive thing was the miraculously oil-free onion rings. That takes skill! We took about 1/3 of the meat to go; made for a great lunch the next day.

As we cross the country, we’re making a point of enjoying the local fare. So barbecue in Kansas City; toasted raviolis in St. Louis (just the start of a delightful old-school Italian dinner); and tomorrow, the famous Hot Brown of Louisville: roasted turkey over toast, topped with Mornay sauce, melted cheese, tomato slices and…drum roll please…BACON!!!

Looking forward to an Iron Rooster pop tart this weekend, but fearing that the place will be underwater, according to DD’s weather report. 🙁

My forum friend, there are 3 other Iron Roosters, should the urge be strong for the bacon only Iron Rooster brings to bear and to meet your pop tart jonesing, if DTA is inundated. In Baltimore: Canton and Locust Point, both located near various parts of Baltimore Harbor. The other is in Cockeysville, north of Baltimore. Road trip!
