Important matters concerning the existence of Humanity - BACON

@Capt MJ, just wondering: What is a midshipman’s version of the “walk of shame” attire? If they were to head to Grumps for an early-morning breakfast, for example.

First obstacle - if they are on overnight liberty, “early morning breakfast” would not likely to be the scenario!

Best guess - if they look like what they are wearing saw hard service the night before, it looks like the first meal of the day with plenty of greasy carbs, and no one is saying much, those could be indicators of 1/c or 2/c who had enjoyed some good town liberty.

Is it just a coincidence that Chick & Ruth’s is next door to Acme with the Scotlaur overhead?

Grump’s Cafe Bacon Waffles with a side of bacon! Breakfast all day. Servers wear pajamas. Wear whatever you have on. Keep an eye out for “walk of shame” folks eating cheeseburgers for breakfast and wearing last night’s clothes.

Bacon Bloody Mary at Lures!
Dress a little bit better but casual still fine. Great menu with something for everyone, off the beaten track (not in DTA) or in mall areas. I mentioned them recently. I’m revealing a local secret used to avoid game day crowds for a SA/SA game.

You really need to investigate employment at the Food Channel. You're killing me! :D

With all due respect, I'm thinking dinner, drinks and conversation in person would be much more interesting than watching on TV.

Family is already planning Thanksgiving meal strategy and tactics. We always deep-fry 1 bird, roast one conventionally with stuffing, roast another with bacon liberally draped over it. That’s the one we all maneuver for.

...a nice segue to a Thanksgiving thread? Too early?

I’ll need the turkey bacon instructions, BTW [emoji51]

yum, Thanksgiving. Last year I brined a 20 pounder in vermouth, water brown sugar, kosher salt and herbs and citrus fruit. Then got out the big knives and spatchcocked it. Liberally applied herb butter under skin with nice kosher salt. Best turkey we ever had. I can see roasted brussel sprouts with bacon on the menu this year.......

I’m keeping to the True North of Bacon heading on this thread as best I can.

The technical term for roasting poultry or a cut of meat with bacon draped across or wrapping it, for extra flavor and moisture, is “barding,” for the perfectionists out there.

Google “barded roast turkey” or “bacon wrapped roast turkey.” Plenty of recipes out there.

I also have a bacon-cornbread stuffing/dressing recipe that I have to make for myself in a muffin tin or small casserole, as the northerly-leaning majority of the family wants either the oyster stuffing or the sausage stuffing or the chestnut stuffing.

You had me at Bacon Stuffing.

Interesting that you write stuffing/dressing, as I have heard it both ways but generally "stuffing" when North of the Mason Dixon Line and "dressing" when South. Although to be fair (I think of Letterkenny, everytime I say that) I think "stuffing" is cooked inside the bird, whilst "dressing" is usually prepared in a pan, outside of the bird. I often ponder these things.

Back to bacon. Sometimes I am a troglodyte and actually ingest Stovetop Stuffing (I know, the horrors!) so the next time I do, I'm throwing crumbled bacon in it. That should make it "Mo Bettah".

I agree with your analysis. It's also my observation that north of the Rappahannock it's mostly cooked inside the bird and south of it outside which aligned nicely. If it's cooked in a barded (I actually knew that word) turkey, or has bacon sprinkled on top, then I (as someone from upstate NY who has lived in NC for 35 years) would call it heaven.

EDIT: As an interesting experiment in culinary improvisation, I propose using bacon grease instead of butter in that Stovetop stuffing.

It's the simple things - quiet evening at home; a simple home-made pesto, chicken, bacon pizza; a dark belgian dubbel; and AF football... life is good...

I can't keep up with this prolific thread - I am weeks behind....but I will add that I once made chocolate-covered bacon for a party after tasting it for the first time when it was randomly served at a German polka dance at Saengerrunde Hall in downtown Austin. Turned out really well for my party. Pretty simple. Chocolate-Covered-Bacon-1.jpg

As usual, things come up, a I couldn't attend the NC Bacon Festival. However my wife was able to go with her "turtle nest walker" friend and her 10 year old daughter. Here is her report:

This was no big deal. You could buy 2 slices of maple bacon, 2 slices of smoked bacon, 2 slices of chocolate covered bacon, and a drink for $10. However the line was too long, and considering the prices, she passed on that. Heck, I could have my own bacon festival in the convenience of my own home for that prices and have a beer with it. There was someone frying up pork skins and plenty of activities for the kids including helicopter rides, piglet and pig races and other fun stuff. There were lots of different craft tents including the ever popular bacon scented candles. I don't think she is going to be interested in the beer and bacon festival in a few weeks. What a bummer. :)

I had a Jimmy Johns BLT while in Annapolis - and I reacted much like a goose does - after injesting anything.
It wasn't pretty.

I blame the sandwich shop, not the bacon.
