While waiting to hear or waiting for I-Day, fill out every scholarship application that you come across. My DS has been working feverishly, requiring even more letters of rec to get money. The scholarships can be applied to the ACE loan. One bit of advice I see repeated, or should I say regret, is the kids or parents wish they had applied for more scholarships

Good for him!

During DS' CVW, the 1/C on the Mids panel told the parents on Friday morning he stopped all the work for scholarship once he received his appointment because USNA is free. During his firstie year some of his friends have over $600 more than what he received each month because of these scholarships. Make sure they are applicable to non-tuition expenses.

Why apply for so many scholarships? If the ACE loan is $5K, wouldn't my DS only need $5K in scholarships since any amount over that would have to be returned?

If you read the budget book they gave you as a link, the average amount borrowed is $17,500 and they suggest upwards of $20,000.

Posting that info as an attachment for @Kangaroo and others as the link may not work forever.

DD/DS can stop once $17500 is secured. Beyond that it is pure fruitless writing exercise. :)

Thanks for the help. I think I get it now. We don't want the scholarships to merely cover the amount of the Ace loan, we want them to cover all the expenses. And the expenses amount to around $17K.

Not betting on it. He has taken it to heart that he needs money, but he is worried that everyone sees SA and assumes he doesn't need the money.

I applied for some in high school and got the you are going to a SA you don't need it. Sure it's nice to have and leads to more money in your pocket later on, but it's not the end of the world if you don't put a penny towards the loan. Plenty of Mids don't and make it thru just fine. My parents weren't loaded and I had siblings, when I needed some extra cash here and there they always did what they could, but it was rarely needed.

Where have you all found decent scholarship sites? This is something we haven't found very easily. I gave my daughter a huge book from the library with tons of scholarships in them, but they were all so specific. After reading through the book her comments included, "If I was a big supporter of the save the elks campaign I could get some money. I knew I should've joined that band wagon!" :)

Yes! Apply for all the scholarships you can. USNA is N*t free. Travel, internships, NOLs, mid store, DTA, etc. etc.

BTW, the $17k limit only refers to the amount USNA will accept paid directly to the academy. Some (most?) scholarships will be paid directly to the student - not the academy. AFAIK there is no limit to this money.

A good place to start looking for scholarships is at your local high school. HS counselors usually know where the scholarships can be found. Find out where last years scholarships came from.

I am a little confused about what all of these scholarships are for, are they for general expenses or am I missing something? Thank you

A very broad answer - many expenses at USNA are deducted from your available pay. If you have scholarships that can be applied to that when you arrive at USNA, then you will have less deducted and a bigger paycheck auto-deposited in your bank account. Yes, "tuition," room and board are free, but there are all kinds of other things you pay for through automatic deduction. Hope that helps.

Thats what I figured, but I was worrying I missed something. Thank you for the quick and insightful response.

My pleasure. Somewhere in the tangle of threads and posts is one that has a link to the Midshipman Budget Book or whatever it's called at the moment. I will take a stab a finding it.

Edit: Google "Naval Academy Midshipman Stipend and Annual Budget Book." They are produced for each academic year, so 2015-2016 would be current. It wouldn't be too much different than 2014-2015. Also google "Naval Academy Midshipman ACE Loan." That's the automatic loan that gets started when you arrive to cover start-up expenses. Payments are already built in as pay deductions. Scholarships can offset that.
