Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone has any idea of the level of competition in Connecticut for congressional nominations. I checked around on the forums but there are no recent posts or updated information.

My FFR told me that my area (District 2) isn't that competitive with our local Congressman Joe Courtney, but I know nothing about ones from our senators (Blumenthal and Murphy). On a side note, he also said that nominations for USNA are much harder to come around here ("submarine capital of the world" and naval bases) and locally that more people apply to Annapolis and Coast Guard than USMA.

Has anyone else been through the process in CT? I still have a year, but I'm curious to see what I'm up against.

DD is a candidate for the class of 2022, and her file is complete with the exception of Dodmerb. She applied to Congressman Courtney, and both Senators. She made sure to get her application in on time, and she was fortunate enough to receive noms from both Mr. Courtney and Mr. Blumenthal. Has not heard anything from Mr. Murphy. I can't speak to the competitiveness of any of their slates, but as you have probably read multiple times on the forum, apply to any and all sources. Keep building your file, don't let up, and make yourself as qualified a candidate as you possibly can.

I don't know for sure, but I'd assume your region is of some difficultly considering many more people in the East Coast areas have heard of the USMA, USNA, and USMMA because that's where they are located...also, Connecticut is well-populated. In the Southwest, I was actually asked "what's West Point?" A couple of times. No joke, but most of them know USAFA because it's in Colorado.

Again, I don't know. Just making an estimate.

It's interesting, my FFR told me that the district congressman doesn't ever fill his ten slots and hasn't even required an interview for the past few years for USMA. Navy on the other hand, it's supposedly impossible, and Air Force they nominate almost anyone.

I'm curious to learn more about how hard it is to come across a nom from a Senator... again much more of the crowd around here leans towards Navy. I only know of two or three people to ever go to USMA from my district, and none have ever completed the application process from my school in decades.

Even though CT as a whole is pretty highly populated, luckily for me my district once you get a few miles north is mostly populated by cows.
 
I’m a candidate for the class of 2022 and reside in CT District 2. It’s true our district is not as competitive, I received my nomination from Congressman Courtney a few weeks ago and never had to go through the interview process. As for the Senators, I went to both Blumenthal and Murphy and received a nomination from Senator Murphy to USMA in mid-November. From my experience if you go into the interviews with confidence and are able to explain yourself to the interviewers you’ll do just fine.

Yeah. I'm IN-02 and our district is only competitive because a bunch of kids from my school are always interested in the SAs each year and another military school is located nearby. It's rare to see anyone without one of our school uniforms on heading into an interview with Congresswoman Jackie Walorski's board. I got one from my senator, too, but I didn't expect it...his interview was difficult. I kind of wish we were still interviewing, though! I met tons of cool candidates to all the Academies. Many applied to more than one, myself included.
 
DD interviewed with Senator Blumenthal via telephone as we were out of town at a wedding the only weekend that they were doing interviews. She said it was a bit stressful, but she had no trouble with it, and looked at it as good practice.
 
All interviews make for fantastic practice! Though an SA interview is definitely one of the most important interviews of a candidate's life (as it is both a college and job interview!), it is certainly not the last he/she'll ever have!!!

This is a little old, but for the fours years 2009 - 20012 Courtney's district was not very competitive for USMA and there were not enough candidates to fill all nominations available. For those four years the number of nominations given were: 2009 -4; 2010 - 2; 2011 - 4; 2012 - 6.

In all of those years both Senators submitted full slates of nominations. Competition for Senatorial nominations is almost always competitive, but a small state like Connecticut will be much less competitive than California, New York, etc.

Just remember that with nominations, like investments, past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results.

I know this thread is a little old now, but I can't find many more resources on Connecticut in particular for the admissions process. Did your daughter ever receive the third nomination? Had she received an LOE or an LOA? Do you know if Murphy and Blumenthal use competitive slates? Were other students from her school applying or do you have a rough guess on how many applicants there were for Mr. Courtney?

Sorry for many questions but like I said there tends to be very little representation from CT on here, especially for the Class of 2021 who I would normally direct questions to. I hope all is coming into place and that the DoDMERB worked out. Thank you!
 
Hi, I don't have many answers to your questions, but she applied to all three, did not receive the third nomination. She DID receive an LOA, and is currently awaiting DODMBERB approval. She was DQ'ed by DODMERB, and the RC started the waiver process on her behalf. No other students from her school applied to WP, though a boy did apply to the USAFA. He has not heard either. I don't have any idea about how many applicants there were from Courtney. If I can be of any further help, please don't hesitate to ask. It can be a daunting and frustrating process. OK, anytime. We are hopeful, as it is our understanding that if she can just get this DODMERB thing cleared up, it is highly likely that she will be offered an appointment...........Sorry, I couldn't be of more help. Are you a parent or the prospective candidate?

I'm a candidate. Trying to learn as much as possible before application time arrives! I am most nervous about the DoDMERB as I have a minor thyroid condition that may or may not need a waiver and that I will end up in the same situation as your daughter. I'm sure it's reassuring to know that Maj. Derda himself initiated the waiver. Did your DD ever meet with/contact the regional Field Force rep or attend SLE?

I live in the 5th district of CT and Elizabeth Esty is my congresswomen. I was just wondering if anybody knows how competitive nominations are in this part of the state by chance? If anybody has any information at all I would really appreciate it! Thanks!
