Awesome news where did you see this?!USMMA announced parents & family members can now come onbd campus during Zero Day July 9 ... no drive-by drop off of candidates![]()
I'm sure there is much more than just being "seen" in store for us lol...My son will be working INDOC and will see all the new plebe candidates.![]()
Oh, yeah. . . have fun. . .I'm sure there is much more than just being "seen" in store for us lol...
No opportunity to wear them.Should incoming Plebe Candidates bring civies? Or will there be no opportunity to wear them?
Ma'am, how does leave look our plebe year? I assume we will get some sort of walking leave during the year maybe?Have a small box including civilian gear packed before you leave home so your parents can bring it on Parents Weekend or send it to you. That will be your first opportunity to leave campus other than team movements. You will still have to wear summer whites that weekend when you leave campus, but you can obviously wear casual civilian clothes at your hotel or wherever you are staying. Just don't get caught by an upperclassman traipsing around in civilian clothes at anytime before recognition, or your whole company or class might pay a price for it when you return to campus.
My information is VERY dated, but our first Plebe Liberty came a couple of months or so after Indoc. I missed it, since I was on restriction. . . . I do remember my first time out. A group of us rowed 10 man Monomoys (large row boats) to Liberty Island, sponsored by various shipping companies to race money for Muscular Dystrophy. Wasn't any real free time, though. Then, again when another group volunteered to answer phones in Manhattan for the MD Telethon. We did get a break every now and then and went across the street for a cold beer. . . At the time, my family was living on the West Coast and didn't ever come out. I did get home for Christmas, though. Good preparation for being at sea. . . .Ma'am, how does leave look our plebe year? Thank you both for your help, but what are team movements? I haven't heard of those.Depends on sooo many factors that it is hard to say. And throw COVID in the mix and it is even more complicated. You will definitely get Parents Weekend from usually after the football game until 1800 on Sunday. Fall leave is after first trimester finals until the following Friday evening. (Usually fall leave lasts through Sunday, but the Saturday USCGA football game cuts it short this year.) Thanksgiving leave is from Tuesday afternoon through Sunday. If you live far away, many Plebes and mids use the longer fall break to go home and go to a classmate's home closer to New York for Thanksgiving. Then Christmas break. Aside from those official leave dates, I would not count on liberty as a Plebe. You will most likely be on campus most of the time, at least first trimester. You may get an occasional Saturday afternoon liberty, especially if your class is performing well, but even that can get taken away at a moment's notice if one of your classmates screws up or if the Commandant get a bug up his you-know-what. The best way to escape the campus prison as a Plebe is with your teammates during team movements. Life will be easier after recognition in the spring, but until then, plan for it to suck.
Team movements are when an athletic team goes to compete or other away from the campus.Thank you both for your help, but what are team movements? I haven't heard of those.
Also maybe some clubs are allowed to go off campus to participate in their activity (e.g. -bowling club comes to mind) but then again, I am not certain to what extent membership/participation of plebes is allowed -that might occur more after the plebes are accepted into the regiment - but I don't know precisely, maybe others with more knowledge could share if they wish.Thank you both for your help, but what are team movements? Too long ago for me to recall the specifics. Certainly those attached to the Football Team were able to travel for away games. I do know that joining a club was a great relief valve. Also maybe some clubs are allowed to go off campus to participate in their activity (e.g. -bowling club comes to mind) but then again, I am not certain to what extent membership/participation of plebes is allowed -that might occur more after the plebes are accepted into the regiment - but I don't know precisely, maybe others with more knowledge could share if they wish.
My son told me that the Rugby club was a good place for plebes to 'lift the safeties' and bleed off some steam.. @cmakin I seem to remember you said you were a KP rugger; right?I do know that joining a club was a great relief valve.
This makes me happy. I don’t have a kiddo at the Merchant Marine Academy, but your enthusiasm and positivity are catching and a great way to start your son’s journey. Congrats, Dad!Indoc Day was awesome! My DS was making new friends immediately. Thank u to this group for help along the way
