Induction Day for the Class of 2014

I Day + 2 and already one Plebe is on crutches! Way to go 2014:rolleyes:

There will be enough battered Plebes to make an entire company.

During parades, you'll see the "chit squad" hobbling along behind. They still make them go to parades, even if they can't march. They have to watch.

Detailers wear red name tags and are usually on their way to somewhere with some speed. Mids in summer school, in transition between training blocks or on the Yard for other training have black name tags. There are also a number of just-graduated ensigns and second lieutenants with butter bars still on the Yard doing stash jobs until it's time to report to their ship or training pipeline.

In general, the red nametag means you are assigned, in some capacity, to the Fourth Class Regiment. As far as I could tell, that includes officers. You'll see a few officers walking around the Yard with red nametags.

It has always been a big no-no to have any contact with a Plebe, during Plebe Summer, unless you are authorized to do so. An upperclassman, not assigned to the detail, can get in considerable trouble by even talking with a Plebe.

An area of Bancroft Hall is reserved, and clearly cordoned off, for the exclusive use of the Fourth Class Regiment. Nobody is allowed to enter other than those authorized.

Back from I Day. We logged 3000 miles on the car and it was worth every mile. I Day was the most patriotic and proudest day of my life. I just couldn't stop thinking about all that has happened this last year to get my son to that point. The weather was marvelous. My parents got a handicap sticker as my mom walks with a cane and they were able to drive right on the yard and park. We got my mom's wheelchair out and it was smooth sailing all over the Yard. When we did catch up with son after the induction, he was very worried because his backpack did not show up with the rest of his stuff. We kept telling him not to worry, etc. He must have asked me what time it was 10 times; he was so afraid to be late for lining up. Can't wait to hear how it went for everyone else. I have seen him several times on the USNA facebook link. That is a lot of fun to go on and see if you can find your Plebe. Did anyone else spend a million dollars at the Mid store? I have stuff that I will NEVER use but at the time it seemed like a good idea.... Wonder if the wayward backpack ever showed up?

Everything they brought will eventually get back to them.

Both my sons (Class of 2013) had their braces removed a couple of weeks prior to I-Day. They needed to wear a retainer when they slept at night. They should have been allowed to keep their retainer but those disappeared with their backpacks and some other items. They (and we) were very concerned that their retainers were gone forever.

They got them back the next day or two.

It's like airline luggage - it's never really lost, it's just not where you want it to be when you want it to be there.

That is good to know as I thought maybe everything in his bag was gone forever....ID, Social Security Card, etc. Of course, I don't know when we will find out.......guess it is out of our control.

I-Day was wonderful but definitely bittersweet. No smiles on our plebe's face when we met him on Stribling Walk after the Oath of Office ceremony. It had been a rough day, and all he wanted to do was find a quiet spot and unload with dad and me for a while. For us it worked out best that we didn't have a lot of extended family along - son just wanted a little peace at that point. He was exhausted, frazzled, and stressed, but despite all that he still thought the whole day had been amazing and there was nowhere else he wanted to be! :thumb:
He is very lucky to have two great roommates who kept each other laughing (in the privacy of their room only!), and even luckier that one is a NAPSter - a big help! He had a huge amount of respect for the girls who made it through the day - they had to have the physical strength required to haul around all the gear and they were cut no slack whatsoever, at least in his company. We got a few laughs from him when describing some of the stuff his fellow plebes got fried for - not so amusing when he was the target though, of course!
He was ready to go 15 minutes before the deadline, so we let him take off. I was proud of myself - no tears! But when we got home yesterday I went in to his room, sat down and let it rip! We really miss him a lot around here, but we have faith that he'll be fine and that he's where he is meant to be. God bless our plebes! :thumb:

Upon going through the USNA website and into Facebook last night, my husband and I were shocked to see a picture of our son, him only, at a table, taking exams. Here he was as plain as day with his "missing" calculator. I kept rubbing my eyes to make sure it was him. So, looks like his bag must have shown up!

Blackhawkmom, there is a pic on one of the sites (can't remember which one since I've looked at so many) with a plebe "marching" at the back of his platoon on crutches.

I agree with JennyP. I hesitated to spend the money for membership with Thornton, but it is SO easy to find your kid on that site. I've already found 10 of my son! I like the USNA Facebook site too, because the pics are big and because you can follow what is happening each day. Thornton is supposed to put up a schedule, but it isn't up yet. Did you guys happen to catch the photos of the exams? Those poor kids look completely shell shocked! It was good to see some of them looking a little bit more relaxed during character developement and uniform issue.

I miss my son! Does anyone else feel like the days are crawling? Can't wait until PPW!

Ah yes Thornton's is so easy, and Facebook tells you what they are doing but soon you will see as people start to identify companies and Platoons and their Plebes on Drop shots, and as the two women tell you what the activities are, there is nothing better than the challenge of wading through hundreds of pictures for an unbelievable picture of your Plebe. The entire office would want the report by mid day if they could come see any pictures that I had found. Facebook pictures do not print that large. The Academy posts them at 300 dpi at 1.7 x 2.4 inches - the largest you can pint in focus is about 5x3.5 where as if you download the enlarged picture from dropshot, at least for either nusci or usna10 and 07, you can get up to a 8x10 to print clear. This is important if you try to do any photobooks.

I've decided not to got the Thortons route, because I already have a file of about 12 pics just from dropshots and Facebook! I look forward to Plebe hunting everyday!

There's nothing better in the morning than a cup of coffee and Plebe hunting!.... Last your my oldest son was a plebe and I was glued to face book and Thorton Studios looking for pictures of my Waldo and other service academy forum members Waldo.....LOL! ......it's a wonderful and exciting way to stay connected and it helps ease those plebe summer weeks. Have fun!
