If a mid is injured off campus and requires surgery do they need to get permission from the Academy? The injury does not affect the ability of the mid to perform their duties. It would be better if the surgery was perfomed though and can be done at a later date.

Was this during the academic year and while he/she was "at" school even though not on school grounds? I would definitely be seeing the Dr. at school and coordinating it with them. The Gov. could be on the hook for the bill, there are potentially Comissioning and licensing issues. The USCG is taking a much much much closer look at medical issues today.

If it is emergency surgery then get oneself taken care of.

If it is something that can wait a few hours/days then my first call would be to Patten Infirmary (and if closed, say the weekend, I would call the duty office) to get further clarification on how to handle this.

The number one thing to remember though when getting care is that their "home" address is their address in Kings Point NOT your house. If they use their KP address bills will be much easier handled than when they show up at your house and you have to deal with them.

There are way too many variables for me to be able to give more specific advice at this time and probably wouldn't give you anywhere near the advice you need. Give a call to Patten first thing tomorrow morning to discuss your mid's specific case with the people who need to know and have the answers.
