So our son accepted his appointment in January, and has been looking forward to playing lacrosse at USMMA. He was injured this past weekend in a game, and suffered a fractured clavicle. Does anyone know if USMMA will disqualify for a plate being inserted on the clavicle?

Can it heal on time? It's best not to say anything that may potentially get you dq'd.

back when, DS's separated shoulder (a minor separation) caused him more paperwork grief than did his operated knee/meniscus

Thank you to Mr. Mullen for his advice and help. We have our boy with the premier Sports med/Ortho in the area for surgery, and we will get through this. Just trying to keep moms spirits up, as well as our boys. We have been going through this process since 2019, and our boy will not let this hold him back.

Big_Boatss - Just do it is 101% correct. That kind of advice is not only bad, it's wrong and has no place on these Forums
Thank you again for your help. We will have everything sent over within the next few days as far as treatment. Mikey is with the doctor that alot of the MLB players in our area, as well as rehabbing with him. Additionally, we have a great Athletic trainer group at our prep school. Michael will be 100% in no time. Thank you again

Glad to hear! And, if you haven't done so already, please post his appointment and acceptance on the USMMA 2025 Appointment thread. ⚓

As excites as we are, and as much as im sue his mom would love too, we are technically medically disqualified right now. We are hoping to put this past us, and be ready for I day soon.

The appointment thread serves to get as much information about appointments offered--if your son was offered an appointment, regardless of what has happened since then, we would appreciate you posting his appointment. There is one on the 2025 appointment thread that has a medical setback from last year, so even if something like this happens, we all like to keep up with the trends!

Hoping your son is able to be part of the USMMA Class of 2025 ⚓

I just want to reach out and say.... My DS got into an accident days before I day.... technically a sprained ankle.... but he was in a boot. This was after a year we thought he would be attending and ended up at NMMI (came in late May)
We are now on year 3.... yes you read that right.... year 3.
feel free to message me if needed. We have been through it all... including medically disqualified and seeing his name tag on I day in all of the social media posts.... rough year but we got through

That's downright rotten. Does anyone know why USMMA employs such a cruel tactic? Academics, resume, and the dedication of getting an appointment seems to be cast aside at I-day just because of minor injury, from what I see on the forums. Are academics second priority at USMMA, or something?

Personally, it is unfathomable to imagine breaking a toe immediately before I-day, and consequentially, being royally screwed out of a year of life while reapplying. Embarrassing as it would be excruciating, I could never live down the utter waste of time and effort put into securing an appointment only to have it yanked away at the last second. Based on that treatment, it is as if USMMA appointees were sub-human, undeserving of sympathy. Perhaps I am missing a few puzzle pieces, but that system seems tragically unfair.

Technically- He was dodmerb disqualified due to an injury. He was in a boot and couldn't run. He would not have been able to participate in any of the INDOC activities.... This would have been the case at any of the academies.

We were going to try to get him a waiver in the 2 weeks we had- but after 2 different expert opinions- it would have done his ankle more harm than good.

Let me tell you- It rocked this family. We knew we did the right thing by reporting it- but it sucked. He could have just showed up on I day and tried and then hoped to get a couple weeks off with injury- but he's just too honest.

I mean... his name tag was still sitting on the table on Iday waiting for him.... excruciating for all of us to see. I wasn't sure how this would all play out. Still don't.... as I still have to keep him in a bubble until July 9th!

As hard as I’m praying that my son stays safe and healthy until reporting, I’m adding yours to my prayers too - what an ordeal you’ve all been through!! May no one at any of the academies have medical issues this year!!

I admit that if I could I would take away all of his privileges (including driving) from this moment on but I won’t win that battle. He used a chainsaw and an ax the other day helping friends of ours with some landscaping and I held my breath the whole time. Not sure why I said yes but that won’t happen again.

Doesn't stop once your kid gets into the academy either. There was a 3/C Mid years ago when I was a plebe that got into an accident on a golf cart near campus and hurt himself bad enough that he wouldn't be commissionable. He was medically dis-enrolled. One of my classmates had cancer, they only kept him because he was closer to finishing, graduated with no commission.

Oh gosh, I was kind of hoping that if I could manage to get him there healthy and in tact, he’d become their problem! I guess I need to get used to long term worrying on this level... Thought it would subside with an offer but it just morphed into something new!

I think we’ll just not take unnecessary, obvious risks and deal with the rest when or if it happens! Worrying certainly doesn’t help, at least that’s what I always tell everyone else!

As a parent, I see where you are coming from, but there is a massive difference between this and the needs of the service. As a student about to embark on a Service Academy, your mindset will need to shift to understand the school's priorities and mission. They do not hand out participation awards and there is a real mission at these schools. You do or do not meet the requirements. An appointee should not need to walk on egg shells prior to entering the school, but there should be a healthy amount of bubble wrap applied to the graduating high school senior. YES - you have worked 18 years to get to this point, but it very much can be taken away from the student in an instant. There are real world consequences and injuries like this can be a student's first exposure to such severe consequences to what was once perceived to be a minor thing. USMMA runs at a brisk pace. Students who cannot keep up are either rolled back to the next class or asked to leave. In general, Service Academies are 4 year programs and there is no room to cater to individuals who do not fit the mold. This is quite different from a state school where you pay to go to and they don't care if you finish in 8 years.

I don't mean to be overly critical, but the mindset needs to change or it will be changed for you in an unpleasant manner by the institution and the upperclassman.

Works the same way in the commercial fleet. If you break a toe the day before joining the ship you're not fit for duty, the office will find somebody else to fill your spot. If you're injured in the military you're non-deployable or on light duty probably. But trust me, that year doesn't mean anything takes plenty of people 5 OR 6 years to graduate with no medical issues.
