Inland vs. Offshore

Blue Steel … My Bad! I thought you were asking a question. From your numerous posts it seemed to me like you were trying to make an argumentative statement! I was mis-lead because of the accusations made of KP for making a “contradictive statement.” Usually when someone doesn’t understand an answer, one asks for clarification … not make “accusations of contradictions.” I’m glad you are now satisfied and the arguments are finished.

KP … your insights are most appreciative! Please keep posting! Could you also share your observations / opinions of the differentiation between the deck officers progressions compared with engineering?

Soccerkeeper, thank you for your input, but obviously my "numerous posts" were necessary in order to come to an ultimate resolution.

My original post in response to KpEngineer was "I think I finally figured out what you were trying to say, but I believe you contradicted yourself when you started out by saying it is easier to go from offshore to inland than vice versa?? "

Yes, I was calling out KPEngineer for contradicting himself, but how in anyway was my tone harsh or argumentative? If that is not asking for clarification then I dont know what is.

And in regards to your latest question, you need to be more specific .. inland, offshore, or deep sea? What area, or sector of the industry? Union or private company?

I'm not sure what you mean "progressions"?

Enough!

MFP- Asking for clarifcation about a question allows you to better understand the question, so you are better able to help him out. If you don't like that, you don't have to be on here!!

Please share info and opinions on benefits of obtaining additional endorsements such as PIC, DP, and Towing Endorsements.

And what if any endorsements are available for the Engineering Dept.

Thanks KP!

Get everything you can because you just never know. You never know what turns your career would take and the paths that you may choose to follow so having anything and everything will only help you by maximizing your choices. I never thought I would go back to sea after 10 years shoreside. Most of my shoreside classmates didn’t have that option because they didn’t keep their licenses … you just never know.

As for Engineers … My Engineering License is all the endorsement I need! I already know everything and can do everything so no additional endorsements required!

Seriously though, Engineers can get PIC and some GMDSS stuff but everything else I can think of is geared towards the deck side. GMDSS Maintainer wouldn’t be a bad one to have. Engineers can also get a100ton Masters license since the time required is only time at sea and not time in the deck department.

I recall the DP world as being license neutral as far as credentials and endorsements are concerned but the operator work typically goes to the deckies. Don’t quote me on it though because I haven’t looked at DP credentialing in a couple years and there was talk of changes back then.

The DP certification scheme is changing in 2015. Click on the link below, then click on the PDF entitled "DP Training Certification Scheme - March 2014", then go to page 9 of 28, and you can see a condensed summary of what you need to do to obtain a DP Unlimited. The new system knocks down the amount of DP sea time that you need from 210 to 120. (30 + 180 for old system... 60 +60 for new system)
