Interest in playing a D1 sport at the academy

If I received a 2024 appointment my plan was to always try to walk on either the football or lacrosse team. I was thinking about reaching out to each coach and explain my interest in the academy and I what I believe I could contribute to the team as well. I feel as though if I do not receive a direct appointment, this could help me get an appointment to the prep school and possibly even allow me an academy sports team roster spot.

It’s getting late in the cycle to get yourself recruited for athletics, but you can always try:

If you feel you are competitive for D1 sports, go for it.

If you are academically qualified, it is not likely you would be offered a prep spot.

Are you a star or well regarded player in those sports at your current school ? Have coaches from other colleges been pursuing you?

I haven’t ever looked into recruiting much because I have always been focused on the academies. Honestly, I feel I would be able to contribute at that level.

Have a candidate talk with your coaches. What would they say about your talent, skill, drive, effort, and potential for D1.

Sadly, you did not give much of an answer my questions.
Let me try again:
1. Do you currently play high school football or lacrosse

I have known lots of folks who were not recruited for a sport who were on D1 teams at the Service Academies but the vast majority of the had significant competitive level experience in their sports prior to arriving at the Service Academy.

I wonder if Perry was recruited for USNA? He was on the JV team freshman year...might be an indication he wasn't? I have NO idea!! But he was pulled from the stands and suited up for the game hw was attending and the rest is history. I LOVE his story! It could be a movie...

oops, wrong forum. I was attracted to the title, but the point is the same!

Are you good enough, big enough to play against Michigan and Norte Dame? My son was a 3 year starter in a big, competitive High School, 48 TDS in 3 year, multiple team and league awards, and absolutely no callbacks from any SA, so I leave it at that... the SAs are very competitive and hard to get into.

He was recruited for football

I have a son that has been recruited by UVA, UNC < Davidson and other schools, unfortunately he has not been recruited by AF. Students have the option to walk on to play football. I spoke to the coach of AF and last year 20-25 kids walked on. They took 2 kickers... Yes - kickers...

Understand your frustration and empathize with the situation. My DS, current West Point plebe, had a similar situation with different sport. No D1 offers but several D2 and D3 options including Merchant Marine Academy LOA. He had been in touch with the WP coach since beginning of junior year. Eventually coach told him that he was not being recruited but had walk on opportunity if he received appointment. We had many discussions long before he received appointment about the long shot reality of making the team as a walk on. He fully understood that he was more than likely going to have to outperform most starters in order to even have a glimmer of hope. He ultimately made the decision to attend West Point and was given what he felt like was a fair shot to make the team over the course of several weeks. Self admittedly he did not perform well and was cut. It was a tough couple of days that followed. Fast forward to today, he is actively involved in company athletics and thriving academically. He doesn‘t regret his decision because his primary goal was always to graduate from West Point and ultimately serve our country as an Army officer.

Altruistically we all hope that D1 service academy athletes are there for the right reasons. But at the end of the day, it’s no different at the academies than any other D1 school, the coach’s job is to recruit the best athletes and win.
