Interesting numbers

Like any statistics, the numbers can be interpreted and manipulated to show just about anything. Drawing definitive conclusions is impossible. Shouldn't lose sight of the whole-person concept in all of this. Perhaps an accepted candidate whose test scores and GPA were on the low end of the range overcame a life challenge that trumped the scores. Academics are a big part of the Academy, but Plebes are scored on other things such as Professional Knowledge, physical fitness, leadership, volunteer/community service, along with ratings from their peers and upper class leadership. The statistics can't predict success in those other areas.

Ah thank you I appreciate that!

Is it safe to assume that the people from NAPS are considered in the 3Q'd variable?

Apologies for double posting, I must be an idiot, cant find the edit button. Then again I haven't slept in a couple of days. I digress...

So if the above statement is true, would it be safe to assume that if one is 3Q'd right now, then they have roughly a 1500/2000 (3/4) purely statistical chance of getting into either the academy or prep schools?

The purpose of the prep programs is to prepare those who are not scholastically qualified. To keep them in range of those who are offered direct appointments is one of the reasons for the small size of the 3Qed list. It is just large enough to capture the single qualified Principal candidate in the lesser competitive districts.

Not just Plebes, but all midshipmen are evaluated in this manner. Class standing is based on their QPR (Quality Point Rating) as opposed to their GPA (Grade Point Average). Grades, military aptitude, conduct, and physical fitness are all factors.

Overwhelmingly, GPA is the biggest factor in the QPR. Maxing the semester PRT (Physical Readiness Test) will give you a bump, but nothing like the bump you'll get from getting an "A" in Calculus.

Academic performance trumps all other parameters as far as class standing is concerned. This is why academic performance is the most important (and scrutinized) aspect of a candidate's packet - by far.

Memphis has nailed it. Once one learns to swim, do the pushups, run, and PRT stuff, it's all about 2 things ...getting great grades ...and behaving. Bad behavior gets big bumps.

It would be interesting to see stats from the other side; that is, how do those accepted from the lower range of test scores, gpa do academically. Hopefully those stats are being kept so that adjustments can be made on the admissions side going forward. Also, I wonder if the wider test score, gpa ranges have anything to do with USNA being consistently ranked behind USAFA and USMA in the Forbes and US News college rankings.
