Interesting statistics for nervous applicants

It's not much of a surprise that the services are cutting down their size given the current administration. Rumor that I've heard-rumor-is that the navy is less effected because of ships already being built. That may be the reason USNA is looking at bringing in 1200 plebes as opposed to 1000 at USAFA, and whatever USMA is bringing in (no doubt lower than their usual class size)

It is not a rumor that the focus of the US military is shifting from the Middle East to East Asia/Pacific. It is not a rumor that China is determined to develop a blue water navy and it is deploying its first aircraft carrier to that end. It is not a rumor that China considers Southeast Asia its "Sinosphere" and the South China Sea its private lake. It is not a rumor that countries as varied as the Phillippines and Vietman want the US Navy back as a counterweight to China. It is also not a rumor that almost all commercial trade between East/Southeast Asia and Europe, Africa, South Asia and the Middle East passes the the Strait of Malacca vis the South China Sea.

it should be considered that a significant percentage of operable aircraft in the AF [I was told 50% or more but I cannot vouch for that statistic] are now "pilotless" drones.

I read several months ago (think it was the NY Times) that the USAF is training more drone pilots than fighter and bomber pilots combined.

Long Time Ago

I remember when they introduced the new fighter aircraft that only had missiles because guns where no longer needed. That ended up being a mistake. While the drones are a useful tool, they serve a specialized mission.

The F-4?

Yep to the F-4. And if I remember correctly, the cannon was the weapon to end all wars. But we know that didn't happen.

True - nonetheless, the emphasis is on these pilotless platforms - for better or worse. The demand for pilots is diminishing across the military and it impacts the Air Force far more than naval aviation.

This is why I have always advised service academy applicants that, in my biased opinion, the NAVAL ACADEMY is the most versatile choice because you can go a multitude of routes, all of which offer meaningful and viable careers. If you like to get down and dirty, become a marine or SEAL. If you want to fly you can go Navy Air. Don't like the idea of landing on carriers, don't fly jets or go Marine Air. Want to be on a ship? - go Surface Warfare. You can go Submarines. You can even get one of the few Medical Corps slots. All excellent choices!

In the Air Force, for the most part, you're either a pilot or you're NOT. The "NOT's" are regarded as "second class citizens" in the Air Force hierarchy although they'll never admit to it. But everybody knows it's true. And now there is less demand for pilots. The Air Force is very one-dimensional. The Navy has many dimensions.

^^^That number makes sense at this point in the Admissions cycle. Perhaps the OP meant approximately 300 had accepted Appointments as of the end of Feb., rather than offered. Two completely different sets of data. Best of luck to those waiting patiently!

So if Admissions has made approximately 1000 offers, based on their 85% yield, that would mean only about 300 offers coming this month?

If there are only 300 offers to be sent out yet, does anyone have an idea how many candidates are left in the pool? My DS still has yet to hear either way so I was curious as to what the odds are at this point and when the remaining offers will go out...

The majority of appointments go out in March, according to people who work in admissions. A lot of people still haven't heard. According to admissions they are doing a slate review where they review individual states and districts and they haven't gotten to multiple slates yet.

According to my regional director they are still in review. And I also called my MOC office yesterday, and he said he called admissions to see if he could get an update, and he said they haven't done our slate yet.

Pardon my ignorance.... What is a "slate review" or is it suppose to be a "state review"? We are waiting here in MN. I do know of one person who has received an appt in mid Feb. Is anyone else still waiting in MN?

Slate review is when admissions chooses one or multiple candidates for each member of Congress's slate. So candidates nominated by moc's are competing for their slate

3/5/12

"Dean Latta, the dean of admissions, noted a significant increase in the number of students who already have indicated they will attend. The academy has offered admission to 1,021 students, and 369 students already have accepted. That compares to 268 students last year. For female students, 101 have said they will attend, compared to 60 at this time last year. Among minority students, 102 indicated they will attend, compared to 71 last year."

I could be wrong but I feel like this could mean a lot of things. If they count 20000 applicants from anyone who shows interest this 1,021 could be acceptance offers to naps nass and foundation program as well as appointments to 2016 since it doesn't exactly specify. After talking with my regional director, a marine major at the academy and another admissions official, who all said the majority of appointments go out in march and admissions hasn't reviewed multiple slates yet, I'm going to go with them. Just my belief because of who I talked with. But none the less good luck to everyone still waiting... There's still time.

Thanks!!

I'm color blind, so I don't know what color. And I am fat (so says my DW), so fat is relative.

Not really (at least on the first account). But I figured that I would add a (an additional) little bit of humor. :shake:

Looks like all the number crunchers missed your humor. Very funny, thanks!
