New York City – The State University of New York Board of Trustees today appointed Dr. Michael A. Cappeto as interim president of SUNY Maritime College. Cappeto has served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at the college since last year, and was the director of institutional research and assessment for two years prior.

SUNY Maritime President Rear Admiral Wendi B. Carpenter, USN (Ret.), who has held the position since August 2011 following a distinguished 34-year career in the U.S. Navy, recently announced that she would be stepping down.

“Michael Cappeto has been an outstanding steward of academic affairs, institutional research, and assessment at SUNY Maritime College, and we are confident that he will provide excellent and seamless leadership for students, faculty, and staff while the search for a permanent president is conducted,” said Board Chairman H. Carl McCall.

“As an important member of the SUNY Maritime leadership team for several years, Michael Cappeto is certain to step into his role as interim president with ease,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “Dr. Cappeto’s intricate knowledge of the campus and many years of higher education experience in New York and nationally will continue to be a great asset moving forward.

“Admiral Carpenter is a highly respected leader, trailblazer, and role model whose leadership of SUNY Maritime has greatly benefited SUNY and the college,” Chancellor Zimpher added. “We are grateful for her time and service and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.”

“As provost over the past year, I have been very impressed by the dedication of my colleagues on the faculty as well as our outstanding students and staff at the college,” said Dr. Cappeto. “I am humbled by the confidence placed in me by Chancellor Zimpher and the Board of Trustees to appoint me as interim president, and I look forward to continuing to move Maritime ahead on the many initiatives and projects currently ongoing.”

Dr. Cappeto’s appointment is effective November 4, 2013, and will continue until the Board appoints a successor. As interim president, he will receive an annual salary of $205,000.
