Good afternoon! I had read a year or so ago that IB Diplomas were incredibly highly regarded by the SA’s. Does anyone have more information or personal experience with the consideration of taking AP classes versus earning an IB diploma and if one is more highly regarded than the other? If both options are available, which would be the most advantageous? Obviously probably personal opinion based on experience, but I’m curious what the experience of others has been.

I actually sent an email to USNA about this issue. My DD is in 9th grade and is considered an IB diploma student even though its not till 11-12th grade, she has all honors/pre-IB/AP classes currently. From what I've seen they treat IB and AP the same but... there may be a problem with IB Math. Like you, we want to have to figure it out as soon as possible in case she needs outside classes. The biggest issue is precalculus/calculus. She is aiming for "IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL" which is the stem math. It covers geometry, calculus, trigonometry. If I ever get an answer from USNA I'll share it.

Our reason for doing the IB diploma vs AP is for the benefit at non-SA colleges. She wants to serve but recognizes the need for plan B and C.

In my very small experience of DD, I think that USNA or USMA look favorably if the candidate has taken the toughest courses available. My DD is IB, so she had very ittle flexibility on AP from her school.

There are successful candidates who fall into either of these exam types.

Thank you! That is the math class we have currently selected as well. Another student from the IBDP program in our high school was appointed to USNA 2 years ago and that’s the route he went as well. I appreciate your info!
