I was wondering if it was possible and if so, how difficult it would be to do a internship during the school year in ROTC? I’m in NROTC so summer cruises limit my ability to get an internship over the summer, so the only way to do so would be during an academic semester.

DS was NROTC and did a summer internship as Naval Surface Warfare Center in Carderock, MD. I believe he worked with cadre in advance and 2/c cruise requirement was waived. His internship actually left time after for a cruise, but it sounded like the cadre setting up cruises was not motivated to find one that fit the schedule. He had a great experience, both in the internship and exploring the area.

One of the mids in DS unit did a summer internship with the FBI. I think it is more difficult during the school year. It is easier to work around summer cruise than you might suppose.

DS#2, (non-mil) did internships at Goddard Space Flight Center and JPL. There were ROTC Cadet/Mid interns both places, all service branches.

This is not political, but a fact. Women are hugely underrepresented in STEM, so...

My recommendation would be to work with your cadre. My DD is in AROTC, and internships only encouraged during the summer. Usually, most of the cadets try to pick up an internship through Army Cadet Command or DoD. All internship slots are competitive.

Had internships all four years of NROTC. I only had ROTC 3 times a week, and did internship other two days a week for 4 hours per day. Kept this type of schedule up throughout my 4 years and multiple different internships, never had problem.

As for summer cruise; internship is definitely possible if you find the right boss.

Great! How accommodating was your command if there happened to be conflicts?

NROTC always comes first; I would never regularly miss a mandatory NROTC event for my internship.

When there was a potential conflict (for example; once a year I would go on a one week conference for my internship), I would miss PT/class for that week... but again, only happened once a year and was the command always approved.

Thats the benefit of ROTC; being able to do "regular" things like work a side job at a restaurant and get an internship!
