I have my candidate interview this weekend and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect. My representative asked that my parents accompany me to the interview. What should they expect? Any specific questions that I might be asked? What are the three most important things to do/know when going in?

I appreciate all of your help!

Just relax, be yourself, don't try to "over-impress" the AAP or Admissions Officer.

Good eye contact, confidence but not cockiness, firm handshake. Good luck!:thumb:

I'm still waiting to hear from an Admissions Partner. It's been about three weeks since my admissions officer said she was sending my name the them. I sent her an email a few days ago, but I haven't heard anything yet. Is this a normal amount of time to wait? Thanks!

I wouldn't be too concerned...she probably is a busy woman...if you don't hear by early next week, PM me with her name and I will contact separately. Good luck!

Remember, there are only 3 USCGA Admissions Officers that must cover the entire country, as well as Guam, Micronesia, and the Virgin Islands.

Yes, they are busy, especially this time of year.

However, a phone call to check on your interview request would not be out of line.

I think he's waiting to hear from an AP...but still a call would be ok.

I understand he is waiting to hear from an AAP, but unless he has already been contacted, he would have no knowledge of the AAP assigned to conduct his interview, so how could he PM the name to you?

I believe the "she" he is referring to is his Admissions Officer, as he posted that he has emailed "her."

I had my interview earlier today...I believe that it went very well. If anyone has any questions about it I would be happy to answer. I actually have a question myself: How much weight does the interview have in the application process?
Thanks

It can be the difference between an appointment and a rejection.

The written summary that the AAP submits becomes a part of your applicant record. The observations and impressions written in the report will be read by at least three (3) members of the Academy faculty and staff, and it will be used by the CCEB (Cadet Candidate Evaluation Board) to help them get a better feel for the "fit" of the candidate to the Academy,

Thanks Luigi, I guess that is a good thing because I think it went pretty well.

Spartanshock,
He asked me some pretty general questions(what was your most difficult experience, if you could meet one person dead or alive who would it be?, What experience are you most proud of? et cetera) He also asked me about my school, my interests, what I would like to major in, stuff like that. Regarding the major, I said government and he asked me if I would be frustrated at the academy because I will not be able to take govt. classes until Junior year. I can't think of anything else. Oh, he asked me two tough ethics questions:
1.) You are an advisor to the President and he told you to call a leader of a foreign country to have a meeting. The next call you are going to make is to that leader's enemy (The Pres. told you not to tell the two leaders that their enemy was going to be there). The first leader asks if his counterpart will be there...do you lie and obey the President's orders or tell the truth?
-I thought that was a tough call

2.) If someone comes up to you when you're eating lunch and slams your head against the table and runs away...what do you do?

Those are all the questions that I can remember...I think the interview lasted about an hour.

Good Luck

You can take government classes before your junior year.

Full disclosure with the enemy is never needed. Lie to your hearts content with the enemy.

Ditto...you can take them your first year...that AAP needs to read the catalogue or look at the web site!

I think he meant the question more along the lines of the CGA being much different from civilian schools in the sense that one would have to take courses in engineering, advanced math ect. I think he meant that my focus was not going to be only on government. He seemed very well-versed on the Academy so I think the question was meant to mean something like"do you realize what you're getting into academically?"

True...2 courses each in Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, 4 of Nautical Science etc. That's one of the reasons you get a Bachelors of SCIENCE degree no matter what major.

I spoke to Ms. Bladen, my admissions officer yesterday and she said that the admissions partners in my area (the SF Bay Area) are really overwhelmed right now, but that I should expect to hear from someone pretty soon. I just hope I can get an interview before November 15.

Am I actually assigned to someone? The way she explained the process it sort of sounded like the admissions office sends out a list on Mondays and the partners randomly pick people to interview from it. Is that really how it works? She called during a passing period, so it was a really short conversation and I could barely hear what she was saying.

It is kind of a random process...nobody gets assigned...for example I "found" a candidate from my area and I am interviewing him in a couple weeks. Not sure if different parts of the country do things differently. Good luck.

Do I need to call my admissions officer again if I don't hear from someone soon or should I just be patiently waiting and hoping that someone calls me? I know that it is optional, but I kind of wanted to have one. Does it make a difference if I applied early action? Thanks!
