If I join an intramural sport at the academy that I’ve been playing throughout my life (i.e. basketball) but also want to join a sport that I haven’t ever played as well (i.e. soccer), am I able to join/learn a sport I haven’t played before or will the intramural team only be for people that have experience?

Well, I would say yes. My son had never played dodgeball professionally but he sure had a blast playing it on the Yard. Here is the link to the existing intramural sports. https://navysports.com/sports/2018/5/23/school-bio-navy-intramurals-html.aspx

This part caught my eye is in blue font below:
In addition to the varsity athletic program, the Naval Academy offers a variety of opportunities to participate in a very competitive Club Sports program. Most players in this program are former high school athletes who desire to continue playing a sport, or learn a new one, and are seeking rigorous competition. Although these teams are not sanctioned by the NCAA, they do compete against area colleges

Intramurals at USNA are extremely casual. I think each semester there were 9 weeks of games twice a week. When you do play (and you opponents actually decide to show up instead of nap after school) it’s really just for fun, most people don’t take it too seriously. So to answer your question no experience is required. And as mentioned further above, you don’t always have a say in which intramural you play. Everyone wants intramural cross country so they can their runs in but there are caps and minimums for each sport. So you may be forced to do flag football for example. I recommend buying in and showing up regardless—it’s not a big time commitment and a good way to bond with companymates.
