First off, I would like to thank the administrators and knowledgeable parents and future war fighters on this site for giving up their free time to help the parents and future officers with this incredibly informative group of forums.
I am the father of two great kids, a 19 year old son and a 17 year old daughter. (The wife is pretty good too). My son has enlisted in the US Navy, and he leaves in a month for basic. He was a good student, signed up for college this fall. Approached me and said he didn't feel ready for school but wanted to serve and see the world. Gonna be a submariner.
My DD has wanted to be an Army officer for years. Extremely driven student and a lovely human being. Being prior Army, I joke that she has set the balance back into my world. She has had some challenges in the application process, including requiring medical waiver, but with her grades, test scores, athletics, and extracurriculars has been told she is extremely competitive. She has a primary nomination from my favorite Senator, as well as a nomination from the other Senator. Just sent 7th semester grades a week ago so her file should be complete soon.
She has plan B in place, but wants to be a WP cadet more than anything in the world.
Unsure what I will do next year at the Army-Navy game in Philly next year- NOT

GO ARMY. BEAT NAVY!!!!

Don't tempt Murphy, he of the famous Law. Your son is clearly a smart guy if Navy has already guaranteed him sub school after NTC Great Lakes boot camp. He will likely be tested in his A school (rating school right after boot camp), for possible acceptance to USNA via NAPS. He might surprise you and reach for a golden ring of another flavor. Many prior enlisted at USNA are plucked right out of sub school, if they choose to accept the offer.

Captain MJ- Doesn't matter to me if my son is in the bilge or in the bridge. I'm just looking forward to him being a part of a team that is greater than it's individual parts. He is a quiet, introspective kid. I think subs will be a good fit.

Enjoy the link below - hope you have a chance to go. It's a long one, full ceremony at Great Lakes. Indoors because it's Feb.

Welcome to the board and sounds like great kids. Good luck to your DS as he ventures off to see the world. And yes, Capt MJ is right. With his good high school grades and he stays out of trouble they will evaluate him for USNA/NAPS. No fear, they can't make him and its always good to see all the options out there. I think it shows his maturity to know he isn't ready for school. Sounds like he will make a great Sailor. Hopefully there are lots of future Army Navy battles at your house in the future. Best of luck to your daughter, hope there is an appointment in her future.

Captain MJ- Don't worry. The wife and I will be at Great Lakes, if all goes well, in May-with bells on. We will be empty nesters, hopefully, in July. Sell the five bedroom, get a bungalow, and chase our kids around the globe for the rest of our days.

Navy Hoops- I too was more impressed than disappointed when my son came to me with this choice. Too many kids go away, unmotivated, and throw away thousands of dollars. He will find his way.

Welcome, DelewareDad! Congratulations on having two obviously bright kids who are willing to serve. No matter what branch chosen, I would be proud too.
That said, I am very pleased at my son's choice of U.S. Army.

You never know how this all turns out. My DS began applying to USNA with a goal of the Marine Corps and ended up on an Army ROTC scholarship.

Best of luck to both your DS and DD!

Your lifetime chance at seeing the best marching (sometimes only) you will see Sailors do!

Thanks AROTC-dad.

I was 82nd Airborne. Son will be Navy. Hopefully another U.S. Army family member to make things right.

Couldn't be more proud of them both.

Welcome! My first day, too. Congratulations for having such two amazing kids. A real thing to be proud of!

Welcome @DesertCaliMom ! I am also in California but on the Northern side, but originally from L.A.

We were up in your neck of the woods last year for spring break and to tour Berkeley, Davis, San Luis Obispo and to vacation and for my son to play for the USA National Football Team. We'll be vacationing near the Russian River again this year. I love this state for many reasons, size is one of them!
