Is a sport watch ACTUALLY necessary?

The Appointee handbook says to bring a sport watch, but is it a requirement? If we're going to be training within our squadron 24/7, I don't see where a sport watch would come into play. If it IS REQUIRED, what would you recommend?

It's just something nice to have. As the days drag on, it was nice to see how much time there was until the next meal. Some cadre will be reluctant to give you any time updates too. I doubt it's required though. My G-Shock got me through both of my basic trainings, but honestly, a nice Walmart watch will do the exact same thing.

DS is bringing an old Timex Ironman that was probably purchased from Walmart. When it’s allowed, we’ll send his nice Garmin watch.

Not a requirement but something really handy. Years prior watches weren’t allowed during basic training. Basics would have no sense of time and days would feel like an eternity. Having a watch definitely was something a lot of people wanted so glad to hear it’s a requirement now. Definitely would take advantage of it! I brought a Casio and it worked great.

That’s what we did last year. She wasn’t sure she would be able to charge it during basic and didn’t want to risk the chance of ruining it in the dust/mud.

Just follow the appointee handbook. USAFA has this figured out😃 Nothing that needs to recharged. No smart watches for BCT.

Me and a couple friends seem to be in agreement: we're very glad we had them but wish the future classes wouldn't.

Having a watch allowed you to get up before reveille and gave you more time to prepare before the banging on the doors started another day of dread. They also allowed you to predict how far away the next meal would be or when the day was finally ending.

If you don't have one (which we didn't, for Recognition), you have to spend every activity of every day giving it your all, because you never knew when that activity was gonna end. If you didn't know how much longer you had, you might as well put out as hard as you could. This made Recognition less bearable but more rewarding.

Our BCT cadre would listen outside our doors to check if people were up early

Would a Rolex GMT be overboard?
As long as it meets the requirements in Air Force Instruction 36-2903:
7.3.1.3. Watches. Must be conservative and only one can be worn around the wrist while in uniform, PTG, or civilian attire in an official capacity. Conservative examples (not all inclusive) are solid color black, brown, silver or gold. Prohibited examples are diamond covered, neon, bright colors, and bands that exceed 1-inch width.

and the additional USAFA requirements(no smartwatches during basic) you can bring it, however, make sure you are okay with it getting sunscreen, sweat, mud, grass and whatever comes your way on it.

Just kidding. Going to put in a new battery in the kid's G-SHOCK before he reports and get his Garmin up there after BCT so he can get back to his Strava KOM Hunts.

We have family shared apple ids, so I get me daily proof of life notification when she sync’s her watch. Good luck with your DS’s KOM hunts after BCT, there are some fast times to hunt down up there.

I've still being traumatized by the fact that watches are allowed in BCT, and have been for years.

"Ahh, back in the day...when Dino's roamed the terrazzo...and the air gardens were grass..."

Just to be sure, I don't wear watches, never have, and I don't really want one for BCT. It is ok for me to show up to BCT without a watch?

Agree!

I too am very opposed to the fact that watches are now allowed in BCT. Not knowing the time was one of the hardest parts and I think it cheapens the experience just a tad to have one.

Back in my day... they even went through the trouble of covering up/taking down some of the clocks so we wouldn't even see the time

They did this type of thing during rec for us. But I do agree that watches changed BCT in that we could think "only 20 minutes until (insert meal here)." I'm interested to see if this changes at all under Brig Gen Moga

Go to Walmart or Target and drop the $20 on a cheap sport watch. You'll regret no showing up without one. Just make sure you don't look down at it unless you're "at ease" or in your room.

Will some don't agree with the idea of watches at USAFA BCT, I think it better prepares you the school year and life beyond USAFA. The AF values officers who can tell the time.
