I am just about finished with my Sophomore year in High School, and at this point it looks like I will probably have about a 92% final GPA, which I believe translates to a 3.7. I am also involved in 2 after school clubs (french club, and debate club), and participate in cross country in the fall, and track in the winter and spring, so I am active all three seasons. I also plan on putting in some community service hours over the summer, in order to increase my chances further.
With all of this, keeping in mind that I have yet to take my SAT and ACT, do my chances of getting accepted into VMI look good? If not, what can I improve on or add so that my chances are better?

Yankee -- Here is a link to the VMI Class of 2021 when they entered in Aug 2017:

Your GPA looks to be on a good track. Doing well on the SAT and/or ACT will matter more.

Participation in clubs is good. Better to be club founder or a club officer to show leadership

Cross Country and Track is good. Earning a Varsity Letter is better. Being Team Captain to show leadership is best.

Community Service is good. Starting or sponsoring a community service activity is best.

Best wishes to you. Keep working hard.

Yank I'd say you're in the hunt. Get good test scores.

Average GPA
3.65
SAT Math 580 average
530-620 range of middle 50%
SAT Critical Reading 578 average
530-620 range of middle 50%
SAT Writing Not reported
ACT Composite 26 average
23-30 range of middle 50%

There is a much better school in SC you might want to look at ...

Why do you say the Citadel is better than VMI? As far as academics and military rigor, I thought VMI reigns superior.

OK folks. Keep it on topic, which would be comments on the OP's chances, and not personal comments on why one might think one school is better than another. If it persists I will shut this thread down.

I am applying to The Citadel. Visited the school early summer and really liked the faculty, facilities and area. I have to declare a major and wondering if anyone knows the best major to declare to increase my chances of acceptance? Thank you!!!

Caravan — you might call Citadel admissions with your questions or scour their web site. I know VMI gave preference for candidates desiring to major in Physics when Class of 2019 entered and VMI prominently displayed this information on their admissions page.

Take an SAT prep course and take the SAT as many times as you can. Your score will go up each time and is offered about every 2-3 months on Saturdays. See the college board website for dates and locations. This is the best money you will spend. The SAT carries a lot of weight... it is unfortunate how most high schools do 't communicate that.
