Just wondering if there's any impact on admissions and/or appointments based on type of of high school. I've heard public looks better on an application, and I'm wondering if it's better to leave private for public.

It is best to attend the high school that prepares you for college. That offers rigorous coursework in areas compatible with the West Point program (Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, etc...AP or IB, if available). That offers varsity sports.
So do not worry about the sector or way in which your school is funded, worry about what your school offers and do your best.
People matriculate from all sorts of high schools and all sorts of backgrounds.

There are trade-offs. I do think the size and competitiveness of the school plays a role in evaluating an application, giving some public school students an advantage. However, some kids thrive in a smaller pond and may have more opportunities to shine and build a resume, which may make up for that large public school advantage. If you go with a private school, make sure it will have all of the opportunities for challenging courses and extracurriculars, like DrMom mentioned.

Well, my son was homeschooled so I'd say that being homeschooled gave him an advantage for admissions. I set out a curriculum program that prepared him for college work.

To answer your question - bloom where you are planted. Every schooling option has plusses and minuses. Emphasize the plusses and do what you can to minimize the minuses. Focus on what you can control. Do your very best and don't forget to have fun during your high school years.
