Is there any indication on how much a CFA is weighted?

đź‘‹ Hi Service Academy Forum,

I'm a prospective midn. in CA with a bad -- almost horrid -- CFA. Like, my scores are barely passing anecdotal minimums I've seen for pullups, crunches, pushups, and the 1MR. However, I feel like I have an okay application to balance it:
- 1590 SAT and 4.0
- founder of an app with ~1mil downloads
- 5-month SWE internship with a F500 tech firm
- team captain for UPenn Wharton investment competition
- two varsity captain positions
- 100+ hrs of community service with EMS squad and middle school robotics camps
- Student gov president position
- Received national award for research on naval/maritime history
- prestigious intl/natl. awards in debate, technology, and cybersecurity.

Anyways, how impactful is the CFA on your application in terms of the Whole Candidate Score? Really, that's my biggest concern right now. Of course, I'm trying to improve, but with the turning weather, time might be a resource I'm running out of. I apologize if I came across as ignorant or annoyingly unconfident.

i was wondering the same thing, but from what i've read and heard they don't make a major impact on your overall application unless your scores are exceptionally good or exceptionally bad. just my thoughts

.
Varsity captain for what? .... 1000hrs on EMS? 2 EMS’s I know are in serious shape.
.

Here's how I see it in a nutshell...

The Navy wants their officers in good physical condition. This doesn't mean all officers need to be at a varsity athlete level... But officers need to be in shape. My son didn't think about the CFA, and he doesn't think about the PRT now that he is a Mid. He just took them. His goal is to be in his top physical shape, NOT to be in good enough shape to pass. I really feel that this should be your way of looking at it. Always stay in YOUR top shape and let the scores dictate that.

My son said that it is very obvious when PRT time comes around. Suddenly there are many Mids at the track trying to cram in fitness, like it is a final exam. And he sees lots of energy drinks being consumed on PRT days. Don't be that person. Just get into a routine and get into the best physical shape you can at all times.

Your biggest concern is whether or not the physical aspect of your application is important?
Read the USNA mission statement:

The mission of the United States Naval Academy is to develop Midshipmen morally, mentally, and physically and imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor, and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of Naval service and have potential for future development in mind and character to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship, and government.

To me, that means that there are three (3) equally important things required. I have seen officers try to lead from the rear. They weren't respected officers, but officers nonetheless.

To answer your question -- no one knows the magic formula used to determine the USNA whole candidate score. (If you look hard enough on here, you can find references to the West Point formula, but keep in mind, that may or may not be different, and it now dated). However, you will be "qualified" for Admission if you pass the CFA, even if it is barely passing . However, the bigger questions is how competitive you will be ? You have some good tickets, but if someone else has similar tickets and a better CFA, that could make the difference.

CFA is one element of the Application process that you have some control over ...if you are Captain of two varsity sports, you should know how to train. You've got 3+ months until your application is due ..plenty of time to improve your CFA. If you are concerned that your CFA is going to hold you back, the solution is in your hands.

You say you’re a Captain in two Varsity sports, what are your sports?
If you are struggling with every aspect of the CFA, you have a lot of work to do. Minimum scores and passing should not be any candidates goal. Train hard to do above average as a minimum.
Anyone getting an appointment with minimum CFA scores will likely struggle passing it once at their SA. This will cause a lot of stress and draw unwanted attention. Any Candidate reading this should train hard, do well on their CFA, and continue to train hard all the way until RDay.
Physical fitness training will be your new lifestyle, not just a checked box on your SA portal.
Start training yesterday!
