My son was DQ'd in October. His coach stepped in and helped with everything, and on Dec 25th, after many hoops, extra medical appointments and the athletic liaison going in front of the medical board, he received a conditional appointment. On January 3rd, the coach reached out and told DS that his "ETP (exception to policy was signed and approved. You are all set medically. Happy New Year!"

DodMERB still reflects "under waiver review" and on the USAFA portal, he is still medically DQ'd. The conditional appointment, which he has accepted, says he has until May1 to get medically qualified. Of course my son is just letting it ride, since he received that text and conditional appointment. Should I, or is there someone I should contact to see what the deal is?

What is an ETP? Is he being recruited? Does the coach have the power to give their own “waiver” of sorts?

Yes, he was recruited in July of 2022. I am not of a military background, but I think ETP stands for (exception to policy), which means a waiver was granted. It seems like it is either just taking a long time for USAFA to let DoDMERB know, or it wasn't really approved?

You are correct that an "ETP" is an exception to policy. Normally, and ETP is given to someone to travel past limits, grow a bread, get an extra day off, or maybe get housing when it is not normally available. Never heard of ETP associated with Waivers. I would think a Waiver would be more of "an exemption from standards"? Just thinking, maybe the coach didn't use the right term, but I would call your Admissions Advisor and check, if it was granted in December it should be finalized in his admissions record. I would not take the word of any coach as gospel, they have no seat at the table for waivers. Good Luck, but don't just sit back and wait, grab the bull by the horns and ask;)
