Is this a Medical DQ or not?

On January 14, my son received a letter from DoDMerb site asking for additional medical information. He sent the required medical information January 22 to the contact person at DoDMerb, and she confirmed it was received and would be passed on. On February 8, the USNA sent him an email with an offer of appointment pending the medical qualification.

He's been trying not to worry and look, but I broke down and looked at both sites today. DoDMerb shows in a yellow box that he is "Pending Waiver Submission Review". Yet on January 30, it says a disqualification letter was sent (not to us as far as I know). His status on the USNA site is still, "Medical Qualification" for action needed. So is he still in the running? Who should he follow up with?

Still waiting for the waiver. Relax. :)

My son’s last entry is DQ letter sent.

Under that is agency decision on DoDMERB. It says waiver granted ... the decision of SA appears below the date/event/code box.

Ok, thank you, so until we see "Waiver Denied" coming from the service academy, we can hold out hope, right?

Yes. The Academy grants the waiver if they want the applicant bad enough to waive the DQ. It depends on the nature of the DQ and how many waivers they have already granted for that particular DQ, and whatever else they talk about in Admissions and leave everyone else to wonder about. ;)

There is nothing for your DS to do but wait and see. Good luck to him!

Pending Waiver Submission Review is what is shows when candidate is DQ'd and that info is sent to the SA. If it says 'dq letter sent on 1/30', you should be able to find it on the portal. I think there is a link for 'correspondence' or 'documents', i forget the exact title, but anything they send in in writing is also available on the portal. If you were dq'd, you should get a letter in the mail from DODMERB, and that letter would also show up on the portal a few days prior. You can also look at the history on the portal and see when they received/reviewed your AMI, when a DQ decision was made, and when your status changed to "pending waiver submission'. That will include certain codes that will show exactly what the DQ was for. If you don't know what the details of the dq are, you should find out.

I would recommend you look into that, because often times a new DQ will show up that you weren't even aware of, based on the AMI that you sent. For instance, my DS sent in AMI for one condition and it triggered three separate dq's. Make sure you understand what the DQ is for, then look at the DOD 6130.03 to see what the standard is and then make sure that any medical records that you have that would support a waiver are sent in. Depending on the condition, you might even want to contact your Dr. to provide additional/clarifying info that shows the condition doesn't exist, or that the condition is resolved or whatever.

If your DS has already received an LOA, then the waiver process has likely already started. If USNA wants additional info to help them make a waiver decision, they will request it via DODMERB, they won't ask you directly for it. They may ask you for more info, or they may make a decision based on what they have, so if you think there is anything else that would help your case that you haven't already sent you might want to think about it.

Best of luck!
