So I completed my cfa but for the pull ups when I went down my arms were mostly extended but not absolutely completely like there was still an angle. my gym teacher who has done a number of cfa's counted it. do you think I should retake it?

From the instructions:
The candidate must:

  • Mount the bar with a pronated grip (back of the hands facing the candidate) with arms fully extended in a static hang.
  • Not swing, kick, or bicycle legs during upward movement.
  • Raise the body until the jaw line is above the bar and parallel to the ground.
  • Execute each repetition on cadence (command).
  • Return to a fully-extended static hang position to complete each repetition.

Our DS took his instructions with him and provided them to his PE teacher a week in advance of 1st CFA. They followed them to the letter. He was surprised to hear that a USAFA candidate from prior school year had asked PE teacher to proctor his CFA. He provided only the score sheet. She said he didn't follow the strict guidelines that the instructions require. She regretted not knowing in advance. I wonder how many CFA's get done that way?
I would suggest redoing it and following the rules to the T. You will sleep better at night and the good news is be better prepared so if you get in, you are capable of completing those exercises well for plebe summer.
I also believe this is why USMA is requiring video uploads of pull ups and push ups. DS RO said that they watch each video and will discount any reps that are not to standard.
Our DS is doing his 2nd CFA this week, he wanted to improve his mile time and has cut it by 45 seconds.
Good luck to you, this is a long and grueling process.

Its your call. I would say the cfa is only 10% of the application and the pull ups are a smaller amount... IMHO I would just leave it.

Tough question. My DS trained hard for a year before CFA at NASS as he wanted to max as much as possible. He asked me to give him practice CFA's twice before NASS. I dinged him on pushup form and pullup form according to CFA instructions. That made him even more determined to work on form. At NASS apparently they were not that hyper about the form. He did fine. Not sure what to tell you but those are the facts. For PRT's now that he is at USNA they are quite concerned with form!

Although you might not get dinged for form on the CFA it is always essential to work out with good form. I don't recommend you retake the test, but if you train with good form you will be better prepared for the physical demands of USNA and the military in general.
