from wikipedia:
Cadets in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps are awarded their Prop and Wings insignia after completing Field Training and entry into the Professional Officer Course.

Although the standard insignia is chrome, cadets from all commissioning sources are authorized to wear a gold Prop and Wings device if they are a direct descendant of a veteran who served in the Army Air Corps, served with the Women Air Force Service Pilots, have served at least 20 years of service, have served in combat, or have died in the line of duty.

I thought that was an AFA thing, not AFROTC.

If my memory serves me right, DS never had props and wings in AFROTC on his flight cap. He would have been wearing gold if they did.

What I do recall as tradition at his det., Graduates hand over a butter bar worn on the inside of their flight cap to a 300 upon their commissioning.

IOTW, DS wore a butter bar that was inside the cap of the 400 before him, that was worn before that person. DS handed off that same butter bar to a now 400.

God knows how old it is!

Maybe at some dets., especially SMCs this occurs, but our DS never had it, and his det was considered very large. Won the best large det in the nation in 2012.

That information is true. My dad served for 30 years in the Army and I wear the gold prop and wings. You just need to talk to the person in charge of uniforms and you should be able to get it. Everyone that is a POC wears prop and wings on their flight cap, but not everyone is able to wear the gold one.

From AIR FORCE INSTRUCTION 36-2903

3.14.1. (Added) (AFROTC) POC cadets are authorized to wear gold/silver combination ―Prop & Wings‖ (gold wings and silver propeller) if a relative was a member of the Army Air Corps, if a parent has at least 20 years of military service, if a parent died in the line of duty, or if a parent participated in active combat as a member of any U.S. military service.
