Just looking at the calendar and wondering if this weekend is call #1 for the plebe candidates? If it is, here are just some random bullet points:
* The call may not come at the appointed time--i.e. have your phone on you all day if you can.
* 5 minutes is not a lot of time, and, your DS/DD may not know what to tell you since he/she may be a little overwhelmed--so, have a handy list of questions to ask, (1.how is the food; 2.who is your roommate, 3.are you getting along, 4.how is the PT, 5.how is the swimming, 6.have you been on the boats, 7.any injuries, 8.any issues) (btw, their answers will be--1.it sucks, 2.Mr. X----insert name here, 3.no time to not get along, 4.it sucks, 5.it sucks, 6.not really, 7.i'm fine, 8.don't know)
* Be positive--Don't let your feelings of fear, frustration, selfish feelings, etc., get in the way of propping up DS/DD--(i.e. don't start with saying why have you not written) your job for 5 minutes is to pass along as much pixie dust as you can to DS/DD so they will keep on going.
* Don't bring up those negative things--i.e. we put your room on airbnb and have three people booked already--doesn't really help DS/DD get through indoc.
* Don't nag on what they are doing/not doing--i.e. why are you not eating more vegetables--what do you mean you don't know your roommate's last name, how am I going to contact his/her parents without a last name, etc., why didn't you write grandma for her birthday----I don't think those things work on this call
* if you hear a countdown in the background, and DS/DD says they have to go, they really have to go.
* and, finally, enjoy the talk and enjoy hearing them sound older and more mature.
